Life Skills and its Teaching in Schools

Abstract

Individual and social well-being contributes towards world solidarity and peace. Life skills promote mental well-being by developing one's perceptions of self-efficacy, self-confidence and self-potential and by developing social insight by helping others and contributing positively to the society. Development of life skills is essential among children and especially adolescents since they are most vulnerable to high risk behaviour and other life related problems. In this paper, various life skills are discussed which promote psychosocial competencies and interpersonal skills among students like decision making, problem solving, critical and creative thinking, empathy, resilience, coping strategies etc. which help towards development of a healthy and productive life. Various methods of teaching life skills are also elaborated like the discussion method, debate, role plays, brainstorming, miming, buzz group, games, poetry and recitals etc. which can be used effectively as a part of the school curriculum to inculcate life skills among school students.
