Abstract

This academic work results from the researches realized on the Coleção Mossoroense publishing house, created in 1949 by Jerônimo Vingt-Un Rosado Maia (1920 – 2005), in the city of Mossoró (RN), on the context of the named “battle of culture”. This research is inserted in the field of cultural History, on which we acquire the view of history of the book. Therefore, one of our goals is to analyze how was crafted the idea of “Mossoró country”, an expression created by Coleção Mossoroense’s mentor, through the collection’s editing process and, in this way, by his books and authors. We seek to comprehend these internal and external nuances about the publishing house, discussing it’s many different phases and writers’, geographers’, historians’ and other intellectuals’ comments about this editorial movement in Mossoró. For this quest, our research source was mostly the called “plaquetas”, belonged to the “B” series of the collection – which is distributed in 10 series, from “A” to “J” – and some books from the “C” series, using as theoretical contribution authors as Robert Darnton, who is the main reference, and Roger Chartier. From this documentation, was extracted the temporal cut, which goes from 1982 to 2006. In this way, we enquire ourselves about Mossoró imaginary as the land of the “freedom, knowledge and resistance”, images which the Collection endured along the time, molding the characteristics of Mossoró. And at this point, we emphasize the strategies and political operations of the Rosado family, once it appropriates the city’s memories as a way to justify its political projects. This way, we show that we cannot study the Mossoroense Collection separated from the questions of the spectacularizing of politician in Rosado oligarchy. Therefore, we seek to show the dimension of cultural and political power of the book and a publishing house like it, considered the greatest compilations of titles in the country.
