Rita Indiana, como el Angelus Novus de Walter Benjamin, ve la catástrofe del progreso que amontona ruina sobre ruina, y da a pensar la imagen fugaz un pasado irresuelto, inacabado, porvenir. En este sentido, el aún-no del bucle temporal no entraña el vaciamiento del futuro o la eterna actualización destinal de un presente. Se trata, pues, del aún-no/ya-no de un pasado tenue, frugal y fragmentario. Las figuras de la multiplicidad ponen en cuestión, pues, el predominio del presente y de la presencia como ontología del ser. En este sentido, el devenir fractura la designación del ser; y la operación copulativa “es”, como principio de identidad, ya inoperante, se desvanece. No hay identidad sino diferencia y mezcla. Se trata, pues, de lo enorme y de lo infrafino, por tanto de lo sin medida, de lo fuera de norma –y así, de lo forajido, de lo fuera de ley. No hay fundamento sino tembladeral, ahí donde el terremoto sacude la ontología misma del ser, o bien, ahí donde hace aparecer a la ontología como la estructura misma de la violencia.

implied their function was merely that of mechanical speech. She highlights that, instead, Black men and women used their critical intellectual and discursive skills to support Jesuit evangelical efforts. In the process, they shaped religious practices and outcomes and advocated the well-being and the needs of those whom they were asked to speak to and on behalf of. That advocacy involved, moreover, the articulation of notions of Blackness that were grounded on ideas of virtue and beauty. Chapter four discusses the collaboration between Black interpreters and African catechumens that constructed the meaning of Christian conversion and faith. Through a close reading of textual descriptions of language used during catechetical sessions in Cartagena, and comparisons with contemporaneous texts and images, Brewer-García demonstrates that Black interpreters' description of Black converts as virtuous, beautiful, and radiant differed greatly from those circulating at the time. Chapter five pursues further this emergent understanding of Blackness through an analysis of the recorded visions and spiritual mediation of Úrsula de Jesús, a freed Black woman and donada (religious servant in a convent) in seventeenth-century Lima. The textual evidence of Úrsula de Jesús's understanding of Black religious subjectivity reflects the language used by Cartagena's Black interpreters. Úrsula de Jesús repeatedly described the Black souls who appeared to her in her visions as beautiful, brilliant, and deserving of God's grace. When taken together, the discursive practices of Úrsula de Jesús and of Cartagena's Black interpreters evidence the circulation of a positive notion of Blackness in the Spanish Americas, one that appropriated the Christian tenet of the equality of all believers to claim virtue and beauty for Black Christians. Brewer-García concludes her analysis by contrasting Blackness produced by Black translators and spiritual intermediaries to language contained in other colonial texts, notably legal records. Scholars working with the latter have noted that when deploying colonial writing systems to defend their legal rights, Africans and their descendants sought to distance themselves from Blackness, a category commonly connected to slavery. The association of beauty and virtue with Blackness that Brewer-García identifies reveals, however, a more complex picture of Black consciousness in the Spanish Americas. It also shows us that, if we look in the right places, we can find a Western humanist tradition that embraced diversity and inclusivity.

It centers on the novels La Estrategia de Chocueca (2003) and Papi (2005), along with the song Equeibol (2010), to unravel how characters establish connections with objects that symbolically encapsulate success and the pursuit of economic power. Through exploring the link between material agency and the construction of social identity for the protagonists, the purpose is to inquire into how the influence of symbolic objects on the representation of social and economic dynamics is a central theme in Rita Indiana's work.
