Isaiah as a Unitarian Universalist prophet.
Program Book, ISBL, 2019
The coining of a so-called “Unity” Movement in Isaiah Scholarship can be traced back to a Melugin’s 2008 contribution. Under the label of “Unity” Movement, however, he embraced very different ways of considering Isaiah as a composite whole. The unity of the book has been explored from redactional historical perspectives, as well as from the point of view of canonical criticism or by means of reader-oriented approaches. After ten years from Melugin’s parlance, the session aims to evaluate and reassess the impact of the so-called “Unity” Movement on Isaiah scholarship. We invite therefore panelists to engage in conversation with the “Unity” Movement from the point of view of different approaches to the Book of Isaiah. In particular, we encourage to consider the extent to which a holistic reading of Isaiah affected both traditional historical critical approaches as well as contextual readings. At the same time, we also propose to explore whether and how these different approaches can contribute to shed new light on reading the Book of Isaiah holistically.
