Cada día son más los códigos de conducta empresariales que existen a nivel mundial. Algunos surgieron por preocupaciones de los consumidores, otros por iniciativas empresariales. Todos ellos han dado pie a un número de iniciativas de etiquetado o de certificación. Algunos de ellos fueron realizados por las ONG o por el sector empresarial o instituciones gubernamentales. Muchos hacen referencia a acuerdos y convenciones internacionales, a veces traduciéndolos en normas verificables para su aplicación directa por los productores o los comerciantes.

The nature of linguistic variation is governed by the character and the scope of the networks of interaction, and the frequencies and intensity of communications inside those networks. Standardization, in a complete sense, represents a substantial modification of the conditions of interaction: basically, it expands, structures and consolidates the communicative network. The spread of the standard variety thus acts on the initial conditions, modifying them significantly. As a referential model, the standard reduces geographical variation, imposing specific limitations on the maintenance of forms which are restricted geographically and which have attained social prestige. Standardization also shapes social variation; it establishes or increases the pre-existing correlations between social status and linguistic variants, on occasion inside the framework of another standard. Finally, by expanding the number of contexts of use of the language, standardization acts as a factor of function...

While the life of all kinds of artefacts is one of the most frequented areas within the studies of material culture in today's world, the same has not happened with standards, artefacts silently omnipresent in practically all fields of individual and social existence. In this article I propose to approach the standards from the philosophy of technology to identify their features and characterize them. This work is structured in three parts. In the first part I review the state of the art on the treatment of standards and standardization. I analyze how standards and standardization are usually understood in order to prepare the ground for introducing the idea that standards are artefacts that must be interpreted in their dual role as scaffolding and cement in today's artificial world. In the second section I present a set of features to characterize them. The identification of these features is inspired by the general characterization of the artefacts defended by Broncano (2012), among others. Finally, I present some conclusions that point to the contribution that the philosophy of technology can make to standards and standardisation.

Nadie se atrevería a dudar de la importancia que tiene el desarrollo del lenguaje para la formación del individuo y la constitución de la sociedad. Pero, ¿realmente se tiene claro por qué es tan importante ser competente lingüísticamente para desempeñarse en la vida? Aquí se busca dar respuesta a esta pregunta, señalando el papel que cumple el lenguaje en la vida de las personas, como individuos y como miembros de un grupo social, lo que a su vez permitirá exponer someramente cuál es la perspectiva conceptual que fundamenta los Estándares Básicos de Competencias del Lenguaje.
