O valor da ciência passou a ser alvo de disputa política nos discursos governamentais nestes últimos dois anos. Documentos oficiais, manifestos de cientistas e matérias jornalísticas têm evidenciado esses conflitos. Neste contexto, objetivo deste artigo é, então, discutir, a partir da teoria semiótica de linha francesa, os modos como o valor da ciência estão construídos nos discursos, considerando os percursos temáticos e figurativos e sua inter-relação, inserindo-o num universo cognitivo específico, inscritos em objetos ora materiais, utilitários e breves, ora imateriais, universais, democráticos e longevos. Além disso, mostraremos que o emprego das operações tensivas, graduais e dinâmicas, ajudam a explicar o valor do valor da ciência: a sintaxe extensiva da triagem e mistura e a sintaxe intensiva da tonificação e atonia demonstram como se dão as restrições excessivas de campo ou a mistura indiferenciadora dos domínios cognitivos e pragmáticos que envolvem a noção de ciência. The article starts with a discussion of the Marxian concept of capital and progressively expands the scope of the problems raised by it. What is at issue is the very notion of a political economy of value. With this in view, post-structuralist, anthropological, psychoanalytic and feminist debates are addressed in order to discuss the nature of language as well as of the latter's translation into what appears as its outside. Opposing the nature/culture divide and other corresponding binaries – within which one of the terms often appears as static, lacking, dumb or passive –, the article concludes by proposing an enlarged view of what constitutes social relations, in which Life figures as a system of self-reference wherein the presumed difference between what is material and what is ideological can no longer be sustained.

The text explores Nicos Poulantzas’ last book aiming to establish a relation between the analysis of the capitalist state in State, power, socialism and a critique of the capitalist forms oriented by the critique of value. Two concepts present in the book will be examined. Departing from the famous definition of the state as “a material condensation of a relation of forces”, it will be presented the meaning of the notions of condensation and materiality. Those categories support the idea that the state form should be regarded as a social relation fashioned at the same time by the features of the class domination and by the impersonal character of the value form.
