Elmi "Montefortino" nel Mediterraneo occidentale

The recent discovery of three helmets with apical decorations at the site of the Battle of the Egadi, which occurred at the end of the First Punic War (241 BC), has led to reconsider other helmets of the same type from Heraclea Minoa (Sicily-Italy) and from ancient art market. Other elements useful to understand decorations of third century BC helmets come from the reexamination of other helmets related to the Roman military expansion in northern Italy. Some aspects hitherto neglected and undocumented now are highlighted for the first time, allowing to hypothesize what was the appearance of the ancient helmets and their function.

In the ambit of the Caecina research project, a typological and technical study of Celtic armament from the necropolis of Montefortino di Arcevia, and in particular of the iron helmets restored at the beginning of the 20th century, requires non-destructive investigation techniques (x-ray radiography and computed tomography) in order to guide the choice for new restoration interventions.

Sulla base delle più recenti ricerche è possibile affermare che i contatti fra Mediterraneo orientale e occidentale non si interruppero all’indomani del crollo della potenza micenea, ma continuarono grazie all’iniziativa di imprenditori indipendenti, non direttamente inglobati nel rigido sistema palatino, che avevano in Cipro il loro principale centro di aggregazione. Rispetto al passato però i nuovi protagonisti risultano più difficilmente ‘etichettabili’ da un punto di vista sia sociale sia etnico. Si tratta, molto verosimilmente, di un movimento composito e multietnico, la cui complessa e sfaccettata natura si riflette anche nel tipo di prodotti che raggiungono l’Occidente e che sfuggono spesso a un preciso inquadramento.

If the name of Montefortino was accepted to describe one of the most popular shapes of the helmets of the republican period, it was due to their number and Edoardo Brizio publication in 1899. After the discovery of five bronze helmets, four of them were quickly sold and today they are lost. However, the image archives preserved at the Archaeological Superintendency of Ancona and Pesaro e Urbino inform us very precisely about the morphology and diversity of the shapes documented in Montefortino. According to Edoardo Brizio, those helmets had reached to the Gauls by means of the Etruscan trade, whereas we consider that those headcoverings, sometimes worn by exceptional individuals, can be found mostly in the medio-adriatic zone controlled by the Senons. The success of that kind of helmets with Celts of the Adriatic seems to justify the mention Galeae Senonum by Silius Italicus among the spoils of war exposed in Rome.
