Audio Based Steganography for Hiding Secret Data

Today's increasing demand of internet applications requires data to be transmitted in a secure manner. Data transmission in public communication system is not secure because of interception and improper manipulation by eavesdropper. Large number of digital audio files is copied illegally during file sharing over the network, costing huge loss to the music and broadcast industries. As a solution to this problem, it is required to secure system to send data safely. For having this security conventional system uses techniques such as cryptography steganography or watermarking. Cryptographic technique distorts the information in such a way that it cannot be recognized. Watermarking is the process of embedding into a digital file such a way that its removal is hardly possible. Steganography, which is the art and science of writing hidden messages in such a way that no one, apart from the sender and intend recipient, suspects the existence of the message, a form of security through obscurity. Audio steganography is the scheme of hiding the existence of secret information by concealing it into another medium such as audio file. The purpose of this paper is to propose an enhanced technology for hiding audio signal by combining cryptography steganography and watermarking. The experimental results show that the proposed system has high perceptual transparency, hiding capacity and robustness which is required for an efficient hiding model.

Steganography is the art of science dealing with hiding secret data inside image, audio, video or text files. In audio steganography; secret message is embedded in the digital sound by slightly altering the binary sequence of the sound file. Existing audio steganography software deal with WAV, AU, and even MP3 sound files. Embedding secret messages in the digital sound is usually a more difficult process than embedding messages in other forms, such as digital images. Audio steganography uses different algorithms, but (LSB) least significant bit is applied in this paper. The quality of sound is depended on the size of the audio which the user selects and length of the message.

Digital audio watermarking is a technique for embedding additional data along with the audio signal. Embedded data is used for copyright owner identification. Digital audio watermarking techniques include traditional watermarking and zero-watermarking scheme. In this paper, traditional watermarking scheme is compared with zero-watermarking scheme. In traditional watermarking scheme, LSB technique is implemented in wavelet domain. Zero-watermarking scheme is based on steady sign of certain DWT-DCT co-efficients with maximum absolute value. The experimental result shows that the zerowatermarking scheme is more efficient, robust and imperceptible over traditional watermarking scheme. Staganography is the art and science of secret hiding. The secret message or plain text may be hidden in one various ways. The methods of cryptography render the message unintelligible to the outsider by various transformations of the text whereas the methods of steganography conceal the existence of the message. To conceal a secret message we need a wrapper or container as a host file. Different wrappers or host files or cover medium are used to hide the secret message e.g. image, audio, video, text. The work in this paper aims at enhancing the provision of audio steganography by introducing one LSB (Least Significant Bit) coding technique. We design a high bit rate LSB audio watermarking method that reduces embedding distortion of the host audio with increased capacity of secret text. By using standard and proposed algorithm, watermark bits are embedded into higher LSB layer, resulting in increased robustness against noise addition, which is limited by perceptual transparency.

With the increasing usage of digital multimedia, the protection of intellectual property rights problem has become a very important issue. Everyday, thousands of multimedia files are being uploaded and downloaded. Therefore, multimedia copyrights become an important issue to protect the intellectual property for the authors of these files. In this paper, the domains of digital audio steganography, the properties of H.A.S, the audio and the digital representation transmission environments, and its software metric, are discussed. The main purpose of this paper is to provide a proper background on the usage of audio file for the purpose of implementing new approaches and techniques in digital watermarking and steganography.

We present a novel robust and secure steganography technique to hide images into audio files aiming at increasing the carrier medium capacity. The audio files are in the standard WAV format, which is based on the LSB algorithm, while images are compressed by the GMPR technique which is based on the Discrete Cosine Transform and high-frequency minimization encoding algorithm. The method involves compression-encryption of an image file by the GMPR technique followed by hiding it into audio data by appropriate bit substitution. The maximum number of bits without significant effect on audio signal for LSB audio steganography is 6 LSBs. The encrypted image bits are hidden into variable and multiple LSB layers in the proposed method. Experimental results from observed listening tests show that there is no significant difference between the stego-audio reconstructed from the novel technique and the original signal. A performance evaluation has been carried out according to quality measurement criteria of signal-to-noise ratio and peak signal-to-noise ratio.

This paper presents a novel, principled approach to resolve the remained problems of substitution technique of audio watermarking. Using the proposed genetic algorithm, message bits are embedded into multiple, vague and higher LSB layers, resulting in increased robustness. The robustness specially would be increased against those intentional attacks which try to reveal the hidden message and also some unintentional attacks like noise addition as well.

The rapid development of multimedia and internet allows for wide distribution of digital media data. It becomes much easier to edit, modify and duplicate digital information. Besides that, digital documents are also easy to copy and distribute, therefore it will be faced by many threats. It is a big security and privacy issue, it become necessary to find appropriate rotation because of the significance, accuracy and sensitivity of the information. Steganography and Cryptography are considered as one of the techniques which are used to protect the important information, but both techniques have their pro's and con's. This paper aims to conquer their respective drawbacks and to achieve this we are using a double layer protection technique which is cryptography cum steganography approach.

Broadband communication networks and multimedia data available in a digital format opened many challenges and opportunities for innovation. Versatile and simple-to-use software and decreasing prices of digital devices have made it possible for consumers from all around the world to create and exchange multimedia data. Broadband Internet connections and near error-free transmission of data facilitate people to distribute large multimedia files and make identical digital copies of them. A perfect reproduction in digital domain have promoted the protection of intellectual ownership and the prevention of unauthorized tampering of multimedia data to become an important technological and research issue.

Steganography is a branch of information security which deals with transmission of message without being detected. Message, to be send, is embedded in a cover file. Different types of digital can be used as cover object, we used (.WAV) audio as our cover file in the research work. The objective of steganography is to shield the fact that the message exists in the transmission medium. Many algorithms have so far derived for this purpose can be categorized in terms of their embedding technique, time and space complexity. LSB is the acronym of ‘Least Significant Bit’, is one of the algorithm that is considered as the easiest in way of hiding information in a digital media, also it has good efficiency. It perform its task by embedding secret message in the least significant bits of each data sample of audio file. Ease of cracking this algorithm makes it more prone to visual and statistical attacks. Keeping this in mind few improvisation are being done on LSB algorithm that reduces the ease of cracking message. Modified version of LSB algorithm which we call as ‘MODIFIED LSB ALGORITHM’ uses the pseudo-random number generator to spread the secret message over the cover in a random manner. This algorithm will be more immune to statistical attacks without affecting its efficiency significantly.
