The article discusses several issues on the biography of a prominent Athenian politician Glaukon, the son of Leagros and the relative of Pericles. The authors, basing on the fragment of the Attic red-figure vase from Olbia made by the Penthesilea Painter and marked with the inscription [ΓΛ]ΑΥΚ[ΩΝ] [K]AΛΟΣ, come to the conclusion that the birth of Glaukon should be dated the mid 70s of the 5th century B.C. It is suggested that the Attic vase by the Penthesilea Painter most likely appeared in Olbia, because Glaucon himself had visited this city during the Pericles’ Pontic expedition, shortly after 438 BC. In this article I try to relate selected literary sources to the data of material culture that both reflect social and political processes in Athens of VII century BC and the time of great reformer Solon. Athenian society by that time went through political and social crisis but revolutionary process was stopped by Solon’s reforms. In the year when we celebrate the Great Russian Revolution of 1917 it is very important to look back when the first European social and revolutionary processes began to change European society on its way to democracy.

В статье речь идет о жизни русской колонии в Афинах во время Крымской войны (1853-1856 гг.). На основе дневника и донесений настоятеля русской посольской церкви архимандрита Антонина (Капустина) показано как далекая и одновременно близкая война переживалась русскими подданными, как успехи и неудачи на фронтах военных действий отражались на повседневной жизни, как жители Греции реагировали на любые изменения, связанные с получением новостей из России.
