Qualitative research is a method of inquiry employed in many different academic disciplines. Qualitative research is used in many academic fields such as marketing research, education, health care, political science, communication, journalism, anthropology, sociology, psychology or management. The qualitative method investigates the why and how of decision making, not just what, where, when. ICT helps the researchers from identifying and selecting a research problem to the completion of research project and its publication. It makes available online resources in the form of previous research articles and literature related to research problem. It also provides guidance about types of tools and proportionate sample size. It makes easy the collection of relevant data through multimedia devices like telephone, mobile and email etc. It facilitates the analysis and interpretation of qualitative data through statistical software. Thus ICT plays vital role in every procedure of qualitative educational research.
The qualitative research method involves the use of qualitative data, such as interviews, documents and observation, in order to understand and explain a social phenomenon. In Information Technology and Communication, there has been a general shift in research away from technological to managerial and organisational issues, and thus there is increasing interest in the application of qualitative research methods. Qualitative research methods originated from social sciences to enable researchers to study social and cultural oriented phenomena. Today, the use of qualitative method and analysis are extended almost to every research field and area. The method generally includes data sources with observation and respondent observation, interviews and questionnaires, documents and the researcherÊs impression and perception. Qualitative research represents a systematic subjective approach used to describe life experiences and to give them meaning. The approach aims at gaining insight, explore in depth and understand the richness and complexity inherent in human behaviours (Denzin & Lincoln, 2005). Nkwi et al (2001) describe qualitative research as any research that uses data that do not indicate ordinal value. As such, it deals with data in form of sound, text and images instead of discrete measurable values (units of measure) representing the subject of study. This approach of research seeks to explore the meaning people construct around their world in terms of perception, feelings, experiences and other intangible characteristics of the world around the researcher or the subject of the research (Merriam, 2009).

Introduction: Interest in qualitative research in various fields of knowledge is increasing. Difficulties linked to the teaching-learning process of the qualitative method have been subject of discussion in national and international scientific events. There is considerable controversy in educational research with respect to the use of qualitative and quantitative data and as to what constitutes scientific research. The objective of this study is to explore the degree to which in-service teachers understand the difference between qualitative/quantitative data and methods, validity/authenticity, generalization and how these can be used to solve problems faced by the teachers. The study is based on 84 participants who had registered for a 10-week course on Methodology of Investigation in Education, as part of their Master's degree program. The course is based on 11 readings drawing on a history and philosophy of science perspective (positivism, constructivism, Popper, Kuhn, Lakatos). Course activities included written reports, class room discussions based on participants' presentations, and written exams. Based on the results obtained it is concluded: (a) Most participants understood that the problem to be investigated precedes the method and determines the methodology to be used; (b) As all observations are theory-laden, it is preferable that interpretations based on both qualitative and quantitative data be allowed to compete in order to provide validity to our research findings; (c) The difference between validity and authenticity was controversial and most participants considered the need for interpreting data and hence favored authenticity; (d) Discussions led to the idea of 'degrees of validity' as both validity in the quantitative sense and authenticity in the qualitative sense, ultimately depend on critical appraisals of the community; (e) Generalizability of results obtained from qualitative studies was a controversial topic and most participants agreed that it is not desirable to generalize; (f) Discussions suggested an alternative: In both qualitative and quantitative research generalizability is possible, provided we are willing to grant that our conceptions/theories are not entirely grounded in empirical evidence but rather on the degree to which the community can uphold such a consensus; (g) Most teachers considered the use of participant observation in qualitative research as non-controversial. Research design methods, such as qualitative, quantitative as well as mixed methods were introduced and subsequently each method was discussed in detail with the help of literature review as well as some personal and live examples to substantiate the findings of various literature. From various literature as well as from the own experiences, it is concluded that both qualitative research design method and quantitative research design method are equally important. It is not fair to criticize one method as the researcher is inclined towards the other method. It is practically evidenced that usage of both methods in the research, the researcher can substantiate the case better. However, duration part while using mixed methods to be kept in mind as it will take more time compared to the qualitative and quantitative methods. Hurrying and aborting in the middle due to time constraint ultimately result in poor research. It would be better if the world view towards these methods changes from criticizing mode to effective utilization mode, which will help research community in focusing and bring up better research outcomes rather than wasting time in arguing which method is scientifically acceptable and which method is biased. While I agree that the ontological, epistemological, axiological, and methodological assumptions for qualitative research method and quantitative research method, researchers should know fully about these methods and keep them as effective tools to utilize them in mixed mode, wherever it is appropriate and required to arrive at adequate research findings.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the thesis prepared in Computer and Educational Technologies field in terms of method and to determine what sort of data gathering tools were preferred and how open the method is indicated. Also, document analysis method was used in order to analyze the studies. In this context, 29 of 58 postgraduate thesis employing qualitative research have been analyzed by two researchers. Cohen's Kappa (κ = 0.75; p= .00) coefficient was calculated for determining the coherence between the appraisals made by both researchers and coherence percentage was determined as 85%. The result of this study shows that the research methodology of qualitative thesis (16/29) has not been clearly defined. Besides, the qualitative methods are generally used to augment and verify preciseness and accuracy of quantitative information. Moreover, data gathering methods and tools of the examined qualitative thesis have been compared. Camera and audio recording are the most preferred tools. This situation could be related with the semi-structured interview ratio in these thesis. The results indicate that, the methodology of qualitative researches have to be determined correctly and precisely by researchers, Also, the data gathering methods and tools of these studies should be enhanced via their methodology.
