Purpose-This paper analyses the interaction of two topics: Supply Chain Management (SCM) and the Internet. Merging these two fields is a key area of concern for contemporary managers and researchers. They have realised that the Internet can enhance SCM by making real time information available and enabling collaboration between trading partners. Design/methodology/approach-A literature review in prestigious academic journals in Operations Management and Logistics has been conducted for the period 1995-2005. The objective is to collect, organise and synthesise existing knowledge relating to SCM and the Internet. Findings-Our study has described the impact that the Internet has on the different processes that SCM embrace. The literature review undertaken on the topic has shown that e-SCM has been acknowledged as an outstanding topic in the supply chain literature in the most prestigious Operations Management and Logistics journals, especially after year 2000. The main topics have been e-procurement, e-fulfilment and information flows. Originality/value-The value of this paper is to define e-SCM, to analyse how research in this area has evolved during the period 1995-2005 and to identify some lines of further research.

Human activities, such as mining, forestry, and agriculture, strongly influence processes in natural systems. Because conservation has focused on managing and protecting wildlands, research has focused on understanding the indirect influence of these human activities on wildlands. Although a conservation focus on wildlands is critically important, the concept of residential area as an ecosystem is relatively new, and little is known about the potential of such areas to contribute to the conservation of biodiversity. As urban sprawl increases, it becomes urgent to construct a method to research and improve the impacts of management strategies for residential landscapes. If the cumulative activities of individual property owners could help conserve biodiversity, then residential matrix management could become a critical piece of the conservation puzzle. "Citizen science" is a method of integrating public outreach and scientific data collection locally, regionally, and across large geographic scales. By involving citizen participants directly in monitoring and active management of residential lands, citizen science can generate powerful matrix management efforts, defying the "tyranny of small decisions" and leading to positive, cumulative, and measurable impacts on biodiversity.

Many states and hundreds of local municipalities have passed zoning laws prohibiting sex offenders from living within close proximity to schools, parks, playgrounds, day care centers, and other places where children congregate. The purpose of this study was to investigate the positive and negative, intended and unintended consequences of residence restrictions on sex offenders. Results indicate that residence restrictions create housing instability for many offenders and limited accessibility to employment opportunities, social services, and ...

Research on modularity and commonality has grown substantially over the past 15 years. Searching 36 journals over more than the past 35 years, over 160 references are identified in the engineering and management literature that focus on modularity or commonality in the product and process development context. Each of the references is analyzed along the dimensions subject, effect, and research method. The subjects of these studies have been products, processes, organizations, and even innovations, although the set of references shows a strong preference towards products. Similarly, a broad range of effects has been studied, albeit with the topic cost dominating all other effects. A variety of research methods has been applied to the study of modularity and commonality but the distribution of research methods differs substantially for modularity and commonality research. Despite the wealth of existing research, there are still significant opportunities for future research. In particu...

School discipline addresses schoolwide, classroom, and individual student needs through broad prevention, targeted intervention, and development of self-discipline. Schools often respond to disruptive students with exclusionary and punitive approaches that have limited value. This article surveys three approaches to improving school discipline practices and student behavior: ecological approaches to classroom management; schoolwide positive behavioral supports; and social and emotional learning. The article examines their epistemological and empirical roots and supporting research, suggesting ways to combine approaches.

Similar to specialized institutions for science and technology studies in other countries, CEST's mission is to provide studies serving as a basis for Switzerland's science and technology policy. The emphasis is on analyses necessary for monitoring, evaluation and prospective activities. CEST activities complement those of other institutions and offices. It acts independently and in accordance with scientific methodology.» «Nach dem Muster spezialisierter Institutionen für Wissenschafts-und Technologiestudien in anderen Ländern hat das CEST die Aufgabe, Grundlagen für die Wissenschafts-und Technologiepolitik zu beschaffen. In our days research and development (R&D) increases in importance in all sectors of the economy. Recognizing the decisive role in boosting economic competitiveness and productivity of R&D, in March 2002 the European Council decided on increasing R&D expenditure to 3% of GDP in order to bridge the gap between the EU and its major competitors like the United States and Japan. By passing a law on R&D and innovation, and introducing a compulsory innovation contribution for companies, Hungary has taken important steps towards this objective. Yet, having reached halftime, the proposed goal seems extremely remote. In this study I will investigate the composition and evolution from the regime change to our days of the Hungarian R&D potential, including the number of research units, research intensity and R&D expenditure as a percentage of GDP. By means of time-series analysis models I will reveal the Hungarian R&D trends of the past 15 years and also predict the feasibility of achieving the EU objective. Towards the end of my study I will investigate the evolution and composition of "down-to-earth" results of the Hungarian R&D activity and suggest index numbers for comparison and to measure the results.
