This paper is hosted on the Education pages of the RSC website and was originally written in 2007 to support the 'Time for Change' campaign which resulted in the RSC's Learning and Performance Network, a long standing national project, and the Stand Up For Shakespeare manifesto launched in 2008. This paper outlines a hundred years of teaching Shakespeare in England from the English Association's pamphlet in 1908 to the campaign launch in 2007. It highlights particulalry that calls for active approaches to be used in teaching Shakespeare are not new but neither have policy decsions allowed them to become embedded as normal practice in English classrooms.

I explore how the plays came to be regarded primarily as literary heritage conveying 'universal' values, and how current policy seems to have conflated those 'universal' values with 'British' values.
