Unrestricted usage of the computer algebra system Maple was made available to many sections of undergraduate mathematics classes in 1985 as part of an on-going investigation into the uses of computers in mathematics education. The paper discusses some of the results of the experiment as it has proceeded so far, as well as directions for future work.

This workshop is designed to • present an introduction to Maplets, • demonstrate several examples of Maplets suitable for use with Calculus, • provide a list of the most relevant and useful Maple help documents for Maplet users and authors, and • enable participants to begin to program their own Maplets.
Through a series of presentations and discussions the seminar considered the potential to use CAS in the school mathematics curriculum. Presentations • Professor Celia Hoyles gave her perception of the mathematical needs of the country and how the potential for using ICT related to this, highlighting the role of NCETM in meeting the professional development needs of mathematics teachers. • Ian Forbes presented the “Case for CAS” based on the book of the same name. • Dr David Leigh-Lancaster, of the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority, described his experiences of integrating CAS into the teaching and assessment of senior secondary mathematics in Victoria, Australia. • Conrad Wolfram, of Wolfram Research, gave his thoughts on how a new mathematics curriculum could be developed if the computer were to be fully exploited in the mathematics classroom.

Casyopée is an evolving project focusing on the development of both software and classroom situations to teach algebra. This article first describes the general motivation for the project, then its objectives. It is entering a new phase of development as part of the European ReMath project 1 , with the integration of a Dynamic Geometry module. This article illustrates by example the kind of problem that Casyopée can help to solve and how, and the working environment it creates for students.

This paper describes a research whose main focus is the use of Computer Algebra Systems (CAS) in mathematical classrooms and the didactical possibilities linked with its use. The possibilities of integrating Self-Regulated Learning (SRL) within the CAS environment are brought into focus. Forty-three Israeli students (mean age 13.3) were assigned to two learning algebraic groups. The first group received explicit metacognitive SRL with CAS (CAS + SRL); the second group was exposed to CAS without SRL (CAS). Empirical results from the experimental and case study designs revealed that (CAS + SRL) students outperformed (CAS) students on algebraic thinking and that (CAS + SRL) students regulated their learning more effectively.

This reaction has been commissioned by the PME XI organising committee to consider the contribution of each paper grouped under this heading, to seek common threads, to formulate major questions that still need to be answered and to look for indications in the papers as to how these questions might be tackled. The task is a daunting one. It is rather like attempting to put together a jigsaw puzzle whose pieces were not created to fit together in a master plan, each with a life of its own. It is a problem-solving activity and I shall approach it in a problem-solving spirit. In doing so I should like to acknowledge the help given me by Michael Thomas in formulating this reaction.

Nowadays, it is common for teachers to hear from students complaints about math. They also show a great lack of interest in this subject, which is the basis of the scientific growth of a country and enhances the individual`s logical reasoning, critical thinking and investigative habits. There is a variety of software focused on the field of mathematics; however, many people use the computer only as a teaching machine, arranging the content to be taught to the student in a convenient way. This paper aimed at the development of a computer algebra system to support the teaching of mathematics, using the computer as an incentive for learning.
