The paper presents an evaluation model for nursing education in Sweden, highlighting the historical shift from student-focused assessments to programme evaluations. It employs the Fischbein interactional model to analyze a longitudinal evaluation study of nursing education, arguing for a comprehensive approach that incorporates both student influences and educational content. The findings reveal mixed perceptions among nursing graduates regarding their education's adequacy in preparing them for professional challenges.

In Australia and Norway final examinations to determine eligibility for registration as a nurse were discontinued during the period when nurse education moved into the higher education sector. In response to recent calls for the reintroduction of final examinations we explore the range of knowledge needs for the practice of nursing. These various forms of knowledge demand different forms of mediation and acquisition as well as assessment. There are numerous problems identified in the literature about the shortcomings of examinations as the foundation of assessing clinically based professions. There is a need to develop systems of appropriate assessment to ensure that graduates of nursing demonstrate adequate knowledge and competence to enter their profession.

Objective: to characterize the operationalization of the audit in the assessment of nursing records. Method: integrative review, performed from the question << How the audit is operationalized in the assessment of nursing records? >> through the search of articles published from 2002 to 2012 in LILACS, MEDLINE and BDENF databases, with use of controlled descriptors "nursing records" and "nursing auditing". Data collection occurred in October 2012, treated with the aid of "Microsoft Office Excel" software. Results: the records are the instruments for the assessment of nursing more used, the Haddad method was the most evidenced in the audit practice in nursing records and the permanent and continuing education of health team were highlights of intervention to improve the quality. Conclusion: the audit is able to support the guidelines for improving the process of nursing work related to their records. Descriptors: Nursing Records; Audit of Nursing; Information Management; Indicators of Quality in the Health Care. The objective of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of the national nursing model in Finland. The feasibility evaluation was carried out with nurses using interviews and patient case scenarios in primary, specialized and private healthcare. The nursing process model showed to be feasible in nursing practice but the current national nursing classification (FinCC) was considered to be too detailed, multi-layered and difficult to understand and use. Overall, electronic nursing documentation improves the legal protection of patients and health professionals and makes nursing care transparent, but the nursing documentation systems do not support multi-professional care or information exchange. This study resulted in that the nursing model should conform better to nursing practices and support better nurses in their care interventions. An essential improvement for nursing practice would be specific templates that are easy to apply in specific situations with homogenous patient gro...

To describe the Danish National Health Service Register in relation to research. The register contains data collected for administrative and scientific purposes from health contractors in primary health care. It includes information about citizens, providers, and health services but minimal clinical information. The register covers everyone living in Denmark and data is available from 1990. No validity studies have been reported. Because the data is connected to reimbursement the coverage is assumed to be good. The strengths of the register include completeness, size, and long follow-up period. It is useful for research purposes but reservations must be made regarding its validity.

E G E R O D I ( 2 0 0 6 ) Journal of Clinical Nursing 15, 525-534 Nursing documentation audit -the effect of a VIPS implementation programme in Denmark Aim and objectives. The aim of this paper is to present a study describing nurses' adherence to the VIPS model by evaluating the quality of nursing assessment, and the quantity of completed nursing care plans. Background. Numerous efforts have been made over the years to improve nursing documentation in Denmark. Hospitals have traditionally based nurses' charting on a rudimentary version of the nursing process and on Virginia Henderson's theory of human needs. In 2002-2004 the Copenhagen University Hospital, Rigshospitalet, introduced the Swedish VIPS model for nursing documentation. VIPS is an acronym for well being, integrity, prevention and safety, all of which are seen as major goals for nursing care. The model organizes nursing data according to a system of keywords, which facilitates storage and retrieval of data. Design and methods. The design in this part of the study was retrospective, wherein 50 journals from each of the departments of cardiology, neurology, oncology and urology were audited annually for three years using the Cat-ch-Ing instrument (n ¼ 600). All nursing journals were randomly selected by including the first 50 journals at each site given a specific date. Results. The nursing documentation significantly improved during the course of the study. After the second year the participants used the keywords appropriately and Ó 2006 The Authors. The Swedish National Clinical Final Examination (NCFE) was established in 2007 in order to examine nursing students' clinical competence upon completing their Bachelor's degree in nursing. The NCFE constitutes an innovative method of examination, divided into two parts: a written and bedside test. The aim of this study was to evaluate nursing students' experiences of being assessed by means of the NCFE, in order to obtain information that could be used to improve the examination. A survey was conducted using a questionnaire with open-ended questions concerning the written and the bedside part of the NCFE. The answers from 577 third-year nursing students were analysed using content analysis. The nursing students regarded the NCFE as promoting further learning and as an important means of quality assurance. Its comprehensive nature was perceived to tie the education together and contributed to the students' awareness of their own clinical competence. The strengths of the NCFE especially highlighted were its high degree of objectivity and the fact that it took place in a natural setting. However, the students felt that the NCFE did not cover the entire nursing programme and that it caused stress. It thus appears to be important to reconsider the written theoretical part of the examination and to standardise the bedside part.

This article discusses the difficulties encountered by nursing institutes in developing admission criteria. Eligibility requirements for training are currently based on cognitive abilities. Criteria such as empathy which is much needed for any social profession is hardly taken into consideration. The aim of this article is therefore to underscore the significance of students' psychological and mental development potential. Narcissistic and dissociative difficulties in the social professions are discussed in connection with the importance of admission criteria. The risks involved in developing criteria and the dangers of sadistic relationships of dependency are also discussed. Moreover, there is a focus on both students' functional levels of personality organization and mentalization abilities as they are used as qualification criteria within the social professions. Kernberg's Structural Interview is used to determine the functional level of an individual. The Reflective Functioning Scale by Fonagy et al. is used to assess mentalization abilities in both individual and group settings. The capacity to form relationships with others, to reflect on these and the development for psychological growth qualify students for the social professions. If training institutes focus on these capacities rather than on cognitive abilities when accepting students for training, they will be more likely to assess whether students are eligible for training.

The quality of basic nursing bachelor programmes nationally and internationally must regularly be assessed to ensure that they fulfil requirements and are appropriate in relation to developments and changes in societies and healthcare systems. There is a need for instruments in helping to assess this. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the Nurse Professional Competence (NPC) Scale could serve as a tool to measure and detect possible differences between universities/university colleges regarding nursing students’ self-reported competence. Totally, 543 nursing students who had just completed their academic three-year nursing bachelor programmes at 10 universities/university colleges in Sweden participated in the study (response rate 71%). The students answered the NPC Scale with its 88 items constituting eight competence areas (CAs) and two overarching themes. The results from using the NPC Scale by the students were then compared between the 10 universities/university c...
