This paper examines the role of small and medium-sized enterprises in the Polish economy between 1990 and 1997 with an emphasis on job creation. The results of the survey concerning the situation of enterprises by size (as measured by employment level) and ownership sector (public, private domestic, private foreign) are presented. The birth rates, survival rates and growth rates for enterprises that were established after 1990 have also been estimated. The methods applied in this study have not been used in Poland before. It is argued here that the main sources of new jobs in Poland over the analysed period are newly created private, domestic small and medium-sized firms. Consequently, this sector of the economy should be monitored and supported. The authors opt for the harmonisation of all the efforts plus the establishment of a national model for entrepreneurship support and development of private small and medium-sized firms.
Small and medium enterprises are a key factor in the economies of the Central and East European transition states, where successful small businesses have been expected to grow larger, create jobs and increase prosperity.

The paper encapsulates empirical research on factors driving employment in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Poland. A linear econometric model has been constructed whereby the workforce employed in SMEs (expressed as a percentage of the total number of the working population) has been used as a dependent variable. The quality of the model's results is high, in particular, it may be interpreted as an econometric record of a longterm co-integrating relationship. Further to the research, a hypothesis has been set whereby an increase in employment within this group of enterprises is affected by an increase in the index of monetary freedom and reduction of budget deficit. An analysis of alternative models has also performed demonstrating that an increase in the index of fiscal freedom and a decrease in public debt tends to boost employment in the SME sector as a proportion of the population employed. Intriguing conclusions have been drawn from the analysis of an alternative model under which a strongly correlated unemployment rate has been used as a dependent variable instead of the ratio of budget deficit to the GDP. Consequently, if the unemployment rate increases, the number of people employed in SMEs as a proportion of the employed population appears to grow as well.
This paper is concerned with entrepreneurship and its development in Poland - one of the fastest growing EU economies and the key market player in Central and Eastern Europe. The issues of growth and development perspectives of enterprises as well as their role in growth creation are investigated. Special emphasis is put on measures of entrepreneurship, determinants of its development, the country’s competitive position and the conditions for the development of entrepreneurship. Moreover, the perception of business by society is discussed. The support of the Special Economic Zones, the cluster initiatives and the state policy are important for entrepreneurs and they contribute to further business development. Poland is seeing positive rates of development despite the recent economic downturn. Its high level of competitiveness, strong economic fundamentals and high flexibility will allow to benefit from the global recovery over the next few years. In order to evaluate the development potential of enterprises and the business environment, a SWOT analysis of the Polish SMEs was conducted. Two surveys of Polish small firms were carried out in Gdansk and Lublin in 1999. Four studies of these surveys, 2 descriptive and 2 statistical are summarised and analysed. This reveals the structure of the small firm sector, its expectations with respect to EU accession and its short term expansion plans. The typical nature of the small firm is described and the regional differences in small firms between Gdansk and Lublin are identified with Gdansk having the more developed private sector and a more advanced level of firm development. The statistical analysis of the questionnaires by two teams reveals a series of significant variables correlated with optimism vis-à-vis the impact of EU accession and also with intentions to expand output in the 1999-2001 period.

The main objective of this study was to identify the state of entrepreneurship of small and medium-sized enterprises in Poland in the context of individual regions and to try to identify the relationship between entrepreneurship and international activity, with particular focus on foreign direct investment. This goal was also chosen to inspire more researchers to fill the research gap in this respect. To achieve this goal, research was carried out, consisting of comparative analyses of existing official reports and documents regarding the state of entrepreneurship and internationalization, which would then show the activity of enterprises in relation to their revenues, investment expenditures and their internationalization. It should be mentioned that there are no compact, uniform studies regarding the relationship between entrepreneurship and internationalization of activities broken down into individual voivodships. It is definitely a research gap. For the purpose of this study, i...

The main objective of the article is an attempt to identify factors/determinants conditioning the development of enterprises in Poland over the last 5 years. The author will also try to indicate the dominant behaviours related to the notion of entrepreneurship among the owners of the enterprises under study and identify the relations between the variables related to enterprise management and its development and growth. In addition to the literature analysis, the author chose a survey in the form of a structured interview with business owners as another research method-the survey was carried out in 2018 and 2019 in 200 purposively selected enterprises from the SME sector, which are based in Poland and were established in the last 5 years. After the analysis of the literature and the results of the conducted survey, obviously bearing in mind its pilot character, the author clarified the names of the selected indicators/determinants and expanded their list by those he considered useful from the point of view of the general purpose of the survey-9 indicators/determinants. In the author's opinion, the developed indicators/determinants make it possible to assess the level of enterprise development (direction and pace of changes) depending on selected factors of the local and institutional environment, internal factors, the level of achieved financial results, sources of financing.
The development of SMEs is very sensitive to the overall economic situation of every country such as the dynamics of economic growth, stability of the local currency, supply and demand on the home and foreign markets and the state's micro-economic policy. This paper discusses the SME development in Poland since its accession to the EU in 2004. In this context, the authors examine the question of whether the SME development policies following Poland's integration into the EU has contributed positively to the sustainable development of the Polish economy-we examine whether the country`s accession into the EU has created a better environment for entrepreneurship development than it was in the pre-accession phase. In this paper, we attempt to provide answers to three key questions: (1) What were the main specific adjustments necessary to accession requirements? (2) What are the main opportunities for Polish SMEs arising out of EU membership? (3) What kind of progress has been made in the SME sector after Poland's accession into the EU? Considering the research problem the authors have reviewed the academic literature in search of a theoretical background and conducted the analyses based on state statistical data.

Small enterprises, within the market economy, are initiators of economic development and an important part of every national economy. Due to the nature of private property, entrepreneurial spirit, flexibility and adaptability, as well as their potential to react to the challenges and turbulences in the environment, small businesses give a special contribution to economic growth and higher employment. Entrepreneurship and small business represent a significant and fundamental source for creation of new jobs and expansion of new business practices by providing a significant contribution to economic growth. This applies both to small businesses in the Republic of Srpska and the ones that are located anywhere in the world. The role of small enterprises is especially important in transition countries. During the global economic crisis, small businesses have, both in developed economies, and in the Republic of Srpska and BiH as a whole, proved to be resilient, although this period was cha...
