This paper discusses various reading comprehension skills and strategies, highlighting four modes of reading: skimming, scanning, intensive reading, and extensive reading. It emphasizes the importance of adapting reading techniques to specific purposes and illustrates how skimming allows readers to efficiently gauge content, particularly when deciding on materials like textbooks. The paper further includes practical exercises aimed at assessing reading comprehension through targeted questions related to different forms of text.

We present the radial velocities and blue, optical magnitudes for all of the galaxies within the Durham/UKST Galaxy Redshift Survey. This catalogue consists of ϳ2500 galaxy redshifts to a limiting apparent magnitude of b J Ӎ 17 mag, covering a ϳ1500-deg 2 area around the South Galactic Pole. The galaxies in this survey were selected from the Edinburgh/Durham Southern Galaxy Catalogue and were sampled, in order of apparent magnitude, at a rate of one galaxy in every three. The spectroscopy was performed at the 1.2-m UK Schmidt Telescope in Australia using the FLAIR multi-object spectrograph. We show that our radial velocity measurements made with this instrument have an empirical accuracy of Ϯ150 km s ¹1 . The observational techniques and data reduction procedures used in the construction of this survey are also discussed. This survey demonstrates that the UKST can be used to make a three-dimensional map of the large-scale galaxy distribution, via a redshift survey to b J Ӎ 17 mag, over a wide area of the sky.

Context. There are more than 3000 true and probable known Galactic Planetary Nebulae (PNe), but only for 13% of them there is central star spectroscopic information available. Aims. To contribute to the knowledge of central stars of planetary nebulae and star evolution. Methods. We undertook a spectroscopic survey of central stars of PNe in low resolution and compiled a large list of central stars for which information was dispersed in the literature. Results. We complete a catalogue of 492 true and probable CSPN and we provide a preliminary spectral classification for 45 central star of PNe, This made it possible to update the proportion of CSPN with atmosphere poor in hydrogen with regard to the whole in at least 30% and contribute with statistical information that allow to infer the origin of H-poor stars.

Soil nematode activity in arid ecosystems is determined by well-known limiting factors such as soil moisture and organic matter. The main aim of our investigation was to determine the composition and distribution of the nematode community in response to soil water and organic content in the rhizosphere of the perennial plant Zygophyllum dumosum. The results demonstrated that soil moisture, organic matter, total nematode population and trophic groups differed under the plants and in the control samples. Significant differences in soil moisture, total nematode population and trophic groups were observed. Bacterial-feeders were found to be the dominant nematode trophic group at the research sites. Bacterial-and fungi-feeders were present in the upper 0-10 cm layer during most of the year. A negative correlation was found between nematodes and soil moisture and a positive correlation was found between nematodes and organic matter. Moreover, trophic structure changes and quantity changes in the nematode community were observed within 1 month after quantitative changes occurred in the organic matter. Generally accepted nematode fauna indices such as Wasilewska index (WI), F/B, T, H′, k, species richness (SR), PPI, maturity index (MI), and modified maturity index (MMI), reflect the temporal changes that occurred in the nematode community during the research period. This study illustrates the integrated effect of soil moisture and organic matter on the activity and structure of the nematode communities existing under plants.

We propose a novel approach to annotating weakly labelled data. In contrast to many existing approaches that perform annotation by seeking clusters of self-similar exemplars (minimising intra-class variance), we perform image annotation by selecting exemplars that have never occurred before in the much larger, and strongly annotated, negative training set (maximising inter-class variance). Compared to existing methods, our approach is fast, robust, and obtains state of the art results on two challenging data-sets -voc2007 (all poses), and the msr2 action data-set, where we obtain a 10% increase. Moreover, this use of negative mining complements existing methods, that seek to minimize the intra-class variance, and can be readily integrated with many of them.

Anthropometric measurements were collected from 1,437 public school students in a selected school district in Hawaii every year from 1992 to 1996. Results showed that boys and girls of Hawaiian ancestry (HA) are generally taller in stature and somewhat heavier in weight than their non-Hawaiian counterparts (Non-HA). Also, there are no clear differences between the two groups in BMI, sums of skinfolds, waist and hip circumferences, and waist/hip circumference ratios. When compared to data from NHANES III (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), the median statures of HA boys and girls are very close to the median statures of NHANES III, but the body weights of HA are heavier at most ages. Also, the BMI values of HA are distinctly higher and their medians are closer to the 75th percentile of NHANES III. In addition, the values of the sums of skinfolds and the waist and hip circumferences of HA are also higher at most ages than NHANES III. These multiple anthropometric indicators suggest that there might be more overweight children and adolescents of HA. When compared to the statistics in NHANES III, there are twice as many HA and Non-HA boys and girls classified as obese. Clearly, a serious childhood problem exists among the children in this selected school district in Hawaii. More research is needed in other school districts in Hawaii. Also, it is suggested in this study that using multiple anthropometric indicators, rather than a single one, may be more accurate and appropriate in determining overweight problems in a youth population. The study area, the Roxo Catchment and Reservoir, located in Southern Portugal, Alentejo Province near and including part of Beja town. The catchment including the reservoir covers a total area of 349.8Km 2 . The area is located in semi-arid region and suffers at water scarcity thus proper management for optimum use of the available fresh water resources is very crucial. Knowing the magnitude of the available water resources is the most important step towards proper management.

Young learners should have fun with English! The purpose of this program is to introduce participants to the theory and practice of teaching young learners in the EFL classroom. Participants will engage in enjoyable activities designed specifically for young learners, such as songs, chants, finger plays, and storytelling. In addition, participants will discuss approaches for teaching language within a meaningful context and share effective techniques for making language input comprehensible and encouraging student participation. By the end of the program, participants will be energized and ready to make their young learners have fun with English.
