To repeat, translation is a gift. But not one to keep and hoard. It is a trust to be conveyed, received, and put to use. As a gift, it is both seen and unseen and both aspects make translating a trust for us to use. For translators and instructors in translator training, the trust is a formidable responsibility, but it is a trust also for authors, patrons, and readers. Let me explain what I mean by "seen and unseen." The unseen aspect, I like to say, is like praying. This is how I describe what translators feel. Once they reach a certain facility in translating, translators become aware that there is something mysterious about what they do. Empirical data collection like think-aloud protocols on an applied-science level or aphasia research at a pure-science level do not really explain the feelings we have when we suddenly have a break-through on a difficult passage (Rose, 1991).
