Kazakhstan is a country rich in natural resources even by today’s standards. Thus it was not surprising, that in the first half of the 20th century, Soviet geologists found “old mining pits” while searching for economically usable resources. Subsequent archaeological research mostly around the rich copper ore deposits in Central Kazakhstan or around the tin providing areas in Eastern Kazakhstan proved the existence of an ore winning industry, which can be dated far into the Bronze Age. Furthermore, excavations of Bronze Age metallurgic- and artisan settlements could be placed in relation to special pit mining areas due to comparing finds and natural scientific analyses. Continuative research picked up on those analyses, but concentrated more on the many high quality bronze artefacts, which are divided into different metal provinces and therefore can be related to certain deposits. The collected conclusions concerning the technology transfer or the cultural connections, were unfortunately based on unreliable sources and outdated facts, in a non-critical and unquestioned way. This essay provides a short view of the current state of research of mining archaeological researched areas and ore deposits as well as their respective settlements in Kazakhstan during the Bronze Age.

Eastern Kazakhstan is seen as an important provider of tin and other metals during the Bronze Age for a long time now. However, Kazakhstan has not been included into further considerations concerning the tin distribution of the Old World, unlike Central Asia and smaller deposits in the Middle East; completely unjustified, for there being tin bronzes here and in the adjoining Siberian cultures (Okunev, Karakol’, Elunino, Krotovo-Samus) at an early stage. They became an integral part of the metallic material during the 2nd millennium B.C. A research project, concerning this topic, was organized from the Deutsche Bergbau-Museum and the Ruhr-Universität Bochum in the years of 2003-2008 together with Kazakh partners. This essay summarizes the research of the tin- and copper pits of the Bronze Age, the metallurgic hubs as well as metal analyses on Eastern Kazakh metals, which delivered information about possible trading relations. The tin pit complex of Askaraly in the Delgebetej-mountains can be reported as a special result: Pits, simultaneous burial grounds and settlements with tin ore processing were detected in that area.
