Social laboratories, defined as experimental spaces for co-creation, have currently become the main centres of innovation. Medialabs are experimental laboratories of technologies and communication media which have co-evolved along with the digital society into becoming mediation laboratories of citizen experimentation, observing a confluence of both models. In the last years, these centres have expanded within the higher education context, generating new forms of innovation and posing the issue on how to measure the impact of such open spaces. This paper analyzes the origin and development of social laboratories in Spain. It first reviews their historical development since its antecedents in the 19th Century until the most recent initiatives. It focuses specifically on initiatives launched within the university context, highlighting their role as motors of innovation. Then, it presents the case of Medialab UGR, a co-creation and digital culture centre of social collaboration framed ...

Habitat Living Lab is a network of organizations that aims at developing and applying eco-friendly technologies with low income communities to improve their housing conditions. This article reports Habitat formation from an NGO followed by its interaction with the university. Maturation of the relations among the community, the NGO and the University led to the formalization of Habitat when it joined the European Network of Living Labs (ENoLL) in 2010. The Laboratory of Supporting Technologies for Collaborative Networks (LabTAR) was created for practice and reflection of network projects. Information and communication technologies (ICT) became relevant to promote interaction and innovation. Habitat’s path reveals that this model is feasible. The NGO’s work has already produced social innovation but the projects of technological innovation which began in 2010 are underway. Key elements for Habitat’s good results are: an organization truly committed to the development of the community...

In the framework of a doctoral research project “Undertaking/education, innovation/education, employment/education: languages catching senses” this document contains contributions of social innovation, looking at databases from 2000 to 2013, such as: Science direct, Scopus, Springer Link, Google books, Google and other located in America and Europe. Two conclusions came out of this document: (i) The link of social innovation speech indicates that it is understood as a social process and as an emerging phenomenon in citizen practices context facing social problems; giving priority to collective interests over individual, strengthening social actor’s capacities. (ii) Education/ Communication opens, enters and disturbs minds; gives meaning to innovation as social construct and hope; with plural and total citizen’s participation/conversation, encourages creative fusions that constitute social innovation.
