"ABSTRACT: This paper examines the theoretical and historical principles that shaped the development of Canadian communication studies. The analysis focuses on the University of Toronto as a historical site for the conception and development of seminal ideas regarding technologies of transportation and communication; ideas that have dominated Canadian thought of the twentieth century, and continue to exert an influence today.
