AI-generated Abstract
This work provides a comprehensive overview of Tourette's syndrome and tic disorders within the broader context of neurological and psychiatric disorders. It emphasizes the progression from basic neuroscience research to clinical application, addressing treatment principles and current understanding of these conditions. The authors also explore the interlinked nature of neurological and psychiatric conditions, advocating for a better understanding and destigmatization of these disorders.

(3) vascular wall factors, (4) mechanisms of excitotoxicity, (5) gene expression in ischemia, (6) growth factors, (7) therapeutic window, (8) emerging stroke therapies, (9) clinical applications of new imaging techniques in stroke, and (10) functional imaging. A comparison of this list with previous publications of the proceedings of these conferences readily reveals how much more sophisticated this area has become in recent years. A feature of this conference book that I particularly enjoy is the considerable space devoted to discussion. At the end of each paper, the transcript of the discussion is presented, and at the end of each part is a roundtable discussion of the general topic. The formal chapters are carefully prepared and, as such, some are a little dry. The discussions are often much livelier and are well edited to make the questions and answers coherent. These discussions make it possible to get a better indication of the issues that are causing controversy as well as insight into the thinking patterns of participants. I do not agree with all of the views of some authors, but I will not criticize specific points. The issues are occasionally not well worked out yet, and some interpretations of the data are incorrect. One pleasure of reading this type of book is the intellectual challenge of trying to figure out how much of the content is truly meaningful. If you are interested in a comprehensive review of cerebrovascular diseases, buy a textbook. However, if you want to get a feeling for a field in which state-of-the-art scientific techniques are used to advance understanding and therapy of an important clinical problem, then I cannot name a better source than this book.

Gilles de la Tourette is known for the disease which now bears his name. As one of the closest followers of Jean-Martin Charcot, he always remained faithful to his mentor's views and was one of the most vehement defenders of La Salpêtrière. His activities in the management of hysterics and in hypnotism helped build his reputation during his lifetime, but are now largely forgotten. Gilles de la Tourette had an unusual personality, with hypomanic and histrionic traits. We present some ignored aspects of his life based on the discovery of personal letters which illuminate the hidden side of this famous neurologist.
