This text collects the revisions of some of the most significant degree theses written from 2011 to 2015 in the bachelor degree in City, territory and landscape planning and in the Master's degree in City and territory planning and design of University of Florence, Empoli campus. The theses cover the current diversified scenery of problems within the urban planning discipline, using very different methodologies, interpretations and perspectives of analysis. The territory emerging as the protagonist of the young authors' narratives is a complex and multi-layered object; it is constituted by things and relationships, set on the long times of history, aimed towards the present and projected into the future, and it continues to raise their questions, doubts, curiosities and also some fruitful answers. In exploring a project named Vesta, which aims at giving a temporary 'home' to the unaccompanied minors migrants involving committed Italian families, we shed light on the ideas and representations of 'living together' by autochthonous and migrants. Yet, considering the current pandemic measures of containment-social distancing and isolation at home-we analysed how the lockdown challenged the cohabitation among young migrants and their recipient's families. Observing domestic spaces and family ideas we investigated how the lockdown and sickness representations contributed to mould and re-elaborate symbolic and social meanings given to 'the living together'.

The book documents the results of the research and design experiments of the HousingLab, centred on a pressing problem: the regeneration of marginal urban fabrics in large cities – and Rome in particular – within a European perspective that compares a range of diverse proposals with the most significant international experiences. HousingLab is a research centre that provides services for public institutions, business people, designers, academics and students.

We find translations of ancient villages (vacation resorts), or of the classic and baroque cities (traditional materials or curved streets). It's common the refuse of the modern city, while the "sprawltown" destroys the environment with its low-density residential development and the use of the car. Another model is the futuristic one, based on cinema, literature, comics and animated movies: see Scott's Los Angeles (Blade Runner), a mix of Art Decò and Star Trek, of West and far East.

The author proposes a critical reflection on the topic of scale for the innovation of the relationships between urbanism, architectural, landscape policies and planning. Simmel’s sociological approach foregrounds the paper’s investigation of the relationship between society, imaginary and space. Space as a locus of meaning is a social construction but also possesses some qualities which create a border to the imaginaries producing them. In this context, the categories of space and place, which correspond to social forms or phenomena, are considered as a rhythmic polarity. In the late Modernity, the imaginaries of alterity generate new places, re-enchanting the functionalized spaces which are now meaningless and left to neglect.
