Abstract

This paper will focus on two important, but controversial issues about 'denial', namely the reasons that may lead to the rejection of a given utterance, and the way to identify this utterance whenever it is absent from text surface. We aim to show that 'denial' may be used to object to an utterance on any grounds, including its truth-value, the presuppositions or implicatures it induces, or its form. We also aim to provide some criteria to help identify the utterances that may be under the scope of 'denial', especially in monologue. We believe that inference from cotext and polemicity of the topic under discussion may be fundamental for that matter.
