Difference between industrial designer and product designer is not precisely defined. There is a lot of discussions and misunderstandings about these two professions. What is the job of industrial designer and what is the job of product designer? This question if often asked from people, which want to hire someone to design a new product for them. Through this research, same real-life design contest is given to group of students from Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Department of Mechanical Design, at Industrial design course and to group of students from Academy of Fine Arts, Department of Product Design as product design project. Goal of the contest was to design an upholstered chair for indoor use with a modern and refined style. Goal of this research was to find some unique characteristic of designs from industrial designers and product designers. Resulted designs were evaluated analysing the fulfilment of the requirements criteria defined by contest and analysing additional criteria, which is important for new product design. Analysing the resulted designs some important conclusions are made. Most important conclusion is that industrial designer can be product designer but product designer cannot be industrial designer. For product design, engineering knowledge is not necessary, but for industrial design, it is most important.

Nowadays, new trends see design education not as a discipline shaped by a perfectionist form approach; but as a collaborative holistic, sharing, and exploratory approach. The aim of this study is to develop a perspective on Furniture development and formation in today's world within the innovative, collaborative holistic, ever-evolving process design approaches that have been developing and diversifying since the 90s (Burnett, 2009; Rylander, 2009; Sanders and Stappers, 2008). It is not possible for a single design discipline to answer the scale or complexity of the design problems we face today and seek to provide solutions. Considering that experimental, virtual and real mixed areas will be designed in the future; it is not possible to ignore the fact that areas that work in collaboration with integrated disciplines in the field of design and work with an understanding of common gain will spread. Co-Design expertise/disciplines are involved in the design and production of furniture; many design disciplines such as Communication design, interface design, brand design, graphic design, digital design, system design, transformation design, organizational design and space design require simultaneous/joint/integrated work because of the effort to create the holistic values of design. By proposing a roadmap for the development of design-based professions, these forms of expansion create new areas of design activity where designers facilitate creative collaborations. The research method in the study in which qualitative research method is used can be defined as "explanatory case study". In line with the purpose of the study, one of the qualitative data collection tools, "document analysis" technique was used.

This study sought to identify and qualify the processes for developing plans for new products based on design, using the perspective of management planning for new products. The objective was to depict a situation in which design is inserted in a small furniture sector company. A case study was conducted at a furniture company in the municipality of Santa Maria, in Rio Grande do Sul state, Brazil. The research involved mapping and qualification of the processes of conception of products based on design, according to the perspective of the product planning managers. The study revealed that a series of factors impede the inclusion of design in the furniture industry, mainly related to the location of design within the organizational structure, distancing it from functions related to executive and production planning of furniture projects, thus fragmenting the process for development and execution of new products.

Abstract: This study explores and analyzes recent design-driven innovation (DDI) practices in the furniture industries in Turkey and Sweden. The study was conducted in three phases: an in-depth literature review; the identification and selection of furniture companies; and analysis of the selected companies based on the strategic, operational, marketentry and organizational dimensions. We used case-study methods and conducted semi-structured interviews with designers and design managers of leading furniture companies from Turkey (Nurus, Ersa, Burotime, and Tuna Ofis) and Sweden (Offecct and Skandiform). Through cross-case analysis of national outcomes, we propose additional drivers to DDI theory, such as product segmentation, activity research, culture research and concept/designer research. The results of this study are crucial for all parties involved, as they suggest ways to achieve incremental and radical design-driven innovations. Keywords: Design-Driven Innovation, Design Management, Innovation Strategies, Exploratory Approach, Turkish and Swedish Furniture Firms

Turkey's furniture industry, the export potential, employment count, production of value-added products, the ability to branding is important for the country. With the rapid change in the world of science and technology, the developments have eliminated the boundaries between the countries, and as a result of globalization, and the whole world has become a single and big market for everyone. In order to compete in these market conditions, it is very important to gain branding, technology, quality, qualified personnel, R&D and URGE success and the ability to produce scientific knowledge and turn it into a product. Within the scope of the study, the collaborations that furniture enterprises can develop with universities that produce scientific knowledge will be discussed. Problems encountered in the process of establishing University-Industry cooperation in the furniture sector will be identified and examined with a critical perspective. The suggestions for the issues, disruptions and new methods to be considered while establishing new collaborations are addressed by addressing the effects and roles of professional representatives in the sector, experts in the field with working experience, managers and academic staff and administrators in the university industry cooperation process.
