Edizione degli Annales di Ennio

In his Historiae adversus paganos Orosius records the episode of the Vestal Minucia who was buried alive in 337 B.C. after committing incestum (hist. 3, 9, 5). In ms. Sangallensis 621 of Orosius the St. Gall monk Ekkehart IV (XI sec.) added as an interlinear gloss to that passage (f. 108) a verse of Ennius’ Annales, not elsewhere known (ann. 158 Sk.), and the overwritten words (in campo qui nunc sceleratus vocatur) can be read as an almost complete hexameter. In this paper I suggest that at hist. 3.9.5 Orosius is quoting an otherwise unknown verse of Ennius’ Annales concerning the same episode of Minucia, much in the same way he does elsewhere when quoting Vergilian verses or expressions without stating their origin.

The question of the possible presence of Aeneas’ apotheosis in Ennius’ Annales, so far relying on the controversial Servian commentary on Aeneid 6, 777, has received only marginal attention in Ennian studies. After a preliminary analysis of the scholion and its rejection as a useful testimonium, this article will examine ann. 48-49 Sk., which can provide evidence for the presence of the episode – whose extension and narrative form can obviously not be determined – in Ennius’ poem: in these lines Ilia seems in fact to invoke her father Aeneas as a divine figure. The appendix deals with the discussed meaning of Aen. 6, 778-779 and suggests a new interpretation of these lines.

The article demonstrates that the editio princeps of Ennodius’ opera omnia, which was published in Basel in 1569, was not realized by Johann Jakob Grynaeus (1540-1614) as it is usually believed, but by Matthias Flacius (1520-1575), the Lutheran theologian who promoted the publication of the so-called Magdeburg centuries. A group of unpublished letters by Flacius concerning his relationship with the printers Johannes Oporinus and Henricus Petrus proves that Flacius sent to Petri a copy of Ennodius’ works in order to publish it, and he wrote a preface to this edition. Flacius’ preface is actually preserved in a copy of the editio princeps, now preserved in the Basel university Library, with the shelfmark FK III 11. The paper also contains a reassessment on Ennodius’ works published before the 1569 editio princeps.

The article investigates the ancient edition of Archilochus’ works, examining such things as the division of poems into books, the critical signs that were used to separate poems, and the ordering of poems within books and its significance. It argues among other things that P.Oxy. 2311 (fr. 48 W.2) represents the first column of the Trimeters and that the Epodes were organised according to metre, from the most iambic (beginning with frr. 172-181 W.) to the least iambic (ending with the new fragment preserved by BKT X 11, which was probably entirely dactylic).
