Turbo-fans for a FFU unit should be aerodynamically designed to provide the FFU system with the given flow-rate at the lowest rotational-speed by considering the interaction effect with the FFU casing. In this study, slim and highly efficient turbo-fans are designed to satisfy the given performance at the specific speed by using the hybrid-stacking method of an inducer and a 2D-bladed turbo fan. The mean-line analysis, cascade theory, and CFD technique are all together applied to control the passage areas on the meridional plane from the inlet to the exit of the blade. Furthermore, the torque control algorithm is adopted to improve the performances within the constraints by the motor rpm-torque characteristics, and the resulting measured performances of mock-up fans are discussed. † 인하대학교 기계공학과 대학원 * (주)신성이엔지 ** 책임저자, 회원, 인하대학교 기계공학부

In this study, a method for optimal design of impeller shroud for centrifugal compressor using response surface method (RSM) and multi-objective genetic algorithm (MOGA) was studied. Numerical simulation was conducted using ANSYS CFX with various configurations of shroud. Each of the design parameters was divided into 3 levels. Total 15 design points were planned by central composite design (CCD) method, which is one of the design of experiment (DOE) techniques. Response surfaces based on the results of DOE were used to find the optimal shape of impeller shroud for high aerodynamic performance. The whole process of optimization was conducted using ANSYS Design Xplorer (DX). Results showed that the isentropic efficiency, which is the main performance parameter of the centrifugal compressor, was increased 0.4% through the optimization.

In this research, the design optimization of a composite sandwich has been performed for using as an airplane wing skin. Automated analysis framework for aero-structure interaction is used for calculating load data on the wing. For automated analysis framework, FLUENT is used for computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis. CFD mesh is generated automatically by using parametric modeling of CATIA and GAMBIT. A computational structure mechanics (CSM) mesh is generated automatically by the parametric method of the CATIA and visual basic script of NASTRAN-FX. The structure is analyzed by ABAQUS. Composite sandwich optimization is performed by NASTRAN SOL200. Design variables are thicknesses of the sandwich core and composite skin panel plies. The objective is to minimize the weight of the wing and constraints are applied for wing tip displacement, global failure index and local failure indexes.

Model based control methods are widely used to improve the control performance of diesel engine air systems because the control results of the air system significantly affect the emission level and drivability. However, the model based control algorithm requires a lot of unmeasurable states which are hard to be measured in a mass production engine. In this study, an air system model of the diesel engine is proposed to estimate 11 unmeasurable states using only sensors equipped in a mass production engine. In order to improve the estimation performance in the transient condition, dynamic characteristics of the air system are analyzed and implemented as discrete filters. Turbine and compressor efficiency models are also proposed to overcome a limitation of the constant or look-up table based efficiency values. The proposed air system model was validated in steady state and transient conditions by real-time engine experiments. The maximum error of the estimation for 11 physical states was 11.7%.

Zn-Air energy storage cell is an attractive type of batteries due to its theoretical gravimetric energy density, cost-effective structure and environmental-friendly characteristics. The chargeability is the most critical in various industrial applications such as smart portable device, electric vehicle, and power storage system. Thus, it is necessary to reduce large overpotential of oxygen reduction/evolution reaction, the irreversibility of Zn anode, and carbonation in alkaline electrolyte. In this review, we try to introduce recent studies and developments of bi-functional air cathode, enhanced charge efficiency via modification of Zn anode structure, and blocking side reactions applying hybrid organic-aqueous electrolyte for high power density rechargeable Zn-Air energy storage cells.

Hydrodynamic aspects on three-dimensional effects were investigated in this study for simple and convenient conversion of tidal stream energy using a Vertical-Axis Turbine (VAT). Numerical approach was made to reveal the differences of flow physics between 2-D estimation and rigorous 3-D simulation. It was shown that the 3-D effects were dominant mainly due to the variation of tip vortices around the tip region of rotor blade, causing the loss of lift for steadily translating hydrofoil and the reduction of torque for rotating turbine blade. The 3-D effect was found to be rather prominent for the typical VATs considered in this paper. Simple and yet efficient 2-D approach with the correction of its three-dimensionality was also proposed for practical design and analysis of VAT.

The prediction and design of the aerodynamic performance of a compressor are crucial requirements to properly evaluate the aerodynamic performance and characteristics during preliminary design of a centrifugal compressor because it is not clear to figure out the internal flow property of a compressor including complicated three dimensional turbulent flow. In this study the industrial centrifugal compressor was calculated for variations of mass flow and blade Mach number with 2 cases of different number of diffuser vanes. One of the major cause of the impeller loss is the pressure drop when the operating mass flow rate closes to choking flow coefficient. Momentum transfer and loss characteristics of the impeller are important to understand impeller characteristics. The method was suggested to estimate the impeller performance characteristics.
