Musikerne, bransjen og samfunnet
This chapter discusses musicians’ professional resilience. On the backdrop of several changes that have affected the conditions for musicians’ work, such as increasing competition, relatively low income and the Covid-19 pandemic, one could assume that the music profession is associated with too much risk and is therefore less attractive. In a qualitative interview study of professional musicians in Norway conducted during the pandemic, however, musicians express in different ways that their work and profession is a source of well-being. We identify four strategies and cultural resources that form the basis of musicians’ professional resilience. First, musicians have strong experiences of meaning related to music, experiences that have intellectual, emotional, bodily and social elements. Second, musicians creatively adapt their work to changing conditions. Third, musicians have strategies for reducing their vulnerability in a competitive environment by anchoring their identity in asp...

In the Twin Realms of Denmark-Norway the king was also responsible for the religious life of his subjects. Kirkeritualet [The Church Ritual] of 1685 was an expression of the king’s care for his subjects. It included even guidelines for the priest’s spiritual care for those condemned to death. A “pious repentance”, rooted in the mystical tradition, became an important aspect of Lutheran Christianity following the Reformation. A reckoning with sin, conversion, and the interiorization of faith, following the Order of Salvation, was the path to a new and eternal life. It was by interiorizing the biblical narrative – for those condemned to death, the Passion of Christ – that one took part in such a sanctifying process. The spiritual advisor made the biblical text affective and present, using rhetorical means, in order to transform the heart. After uniting with Christ in the Eucharist the condemned could go to his death on the path to eternal life.
