One of the most famous Japanese landscape of dry stone gardens in Ryoanji temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, has the empty rectangle where white sand was laid in between, in the abstract, placements of 15 rocks with mosses that seem to be scattered in seemingly haphazard. The stone placements designed by the ancient anonymous designer look random at a glance, however, the stones are placed recursively in obtuse inequilateral triangle in different three level scales. If we plot the size and the rank of the three level obtuse inequilateral triangles in log scale, we obtain the perfect Zipf's law. The eye tracking experiments are performed and the "PageRank" of eye movement are measured assuming the eye movement from one vertex to another is a forward link. For more precise analysis, The eye tracking experiments are performed and the Hotspot map and "PageRank" of eye movement are measured assuming the eye movement from one vertex to another is a forward link. The "PageRank" of eye movements analysis showed the possibility of existence of "visual dissonance effect" in the Ryoanji dry stone garden.

This study investigated the relationship between facial youthfulness and facial areas. The cognitive model reported previously shows that youthfulness is a complex impression composed of estimated age, lively impression, and clean impression. Eight participants rated these impressions of seven facial images using Scheffe's paired comparison method. The images consisted of an average face of 19 women in their 50s and modified average faces by adding moderate or severe wrinkles on the forehead, under the eyes, or around the mouth of the average face. Additionally, eye-movements were monitored during the rating of the average face. These investigations revealed that youthfulness and estimated age related to forehead and under-eye areas, whereas lively impression and clean impression related to under-eye area. Further analysis suggested that youthfulness had a combined feature of other three impressions. These results support the cognitive model of youthfulness reported previously and demonstrate that important facial areas vary with impressions.

The "Niwaki chōhōki" is a technical book on garden plant nursing written by the Kyoto uekiya (gardener/plant dealer) Heisuke in the mid-Edo period. This study aims to reveal the knowledge described in this book and identify planting trends from the plant species it refers to. The "Niwaki chōhōki" is thought to have been published in the first half of the 18th century. Since the book contains several work songs meant to be shared with others, it is likely that the knowledge contained in the book belongs not to an individual, but rather to a group of uekiya. The descriptions of grafting techniques show that some techniques later were discontinued and remain forgotten today. Comparison with a horticultural book published in Edo at the end of the 17th century, "Kadan jikinshō," revealed that there was a difference in plant nursing techniques between Edo and Kyoto. The "Niwaki chōhōki" mentions pine candling, one of the most important aspects of garden fostering in Kyoto today, which is not mentioned in the "Kadan jikinshō." Thus, it was revealed that "Niwaki chōhōki" is a highly valuable historical document that demonstrates the knowledge and technique of Kyoto uekiya in the 18th century and the plant species they handled.

119 For伊 oplefrom non -kanji cultures, the single greatest barrier to acquiring the ]apanese 1anguage is learning the ]apanese characters (henceforth, kanji) . 1n this article, this problem wil be examined from the perspective of the author' s kanji literacy autobiography, a comparison of four published kanji learning methods, psycholinguistic studies of kanji acquisition, and psychological studies of effective memory strategies. 1紅 'guethat卯 orlydeveloped visua1 memory ability is the primary cause of kanji learning difficulties for ]apanese language learners from non-kanji cultures and that common rote memory approaches which rely heavily on kinetic memory are ineffective. 1n order to foster visual memories, it is essential to employ learning methods that more carefully take into account the mechanisms of human memory.

This research investigates the technique for cherry trees maintenance in the early 20th century by literature, especially articles of "Sakura-Japanese Cherry Blossoms (Journal)" (1918-1943) which was published by Society of Cherry Tress. As a result, the total number of articles was 444, and these included 47 articles about technique for cherry tree maintenance. These 47 articles mainly revealed the following 5 categories: "Pruning", "Fertilizing", "Planting", "Conservation", and "Pests Management". In addition, the contents of descriptions in 47 articles were fundamentally equivalent to the present recognition. However, some technique had been evolving from the early 20th century to present with diversifications of machinery and materials. The results and considerations in this research are important for keep improving the technique of cherry trees maintenance in the future. English abstract into Japanese. Three to six keywords should be presented next to the abstract.
