There isn’t one community-based approach to research in the social sciences but many, and they carry a variety of labels: for example, ‘action research’, ‘participatory research’, ‘participatory action research’, and ‘community- based participatory research’. They differ in degree of collaboration, but all assume that a social scientist should not take more from her subjects than she gives back to them, and that she should teach or embolden and not simply observe, survey or probe the members of the community she has chosen to be the subjects of her research.

Broadly defined, community-based research (CBR) is a process of conducting research that embraces and integrates the participation and local knowledge of people in communities and organizations with the goal of informing efforts to achieve social change. Although several publications on CBR exist, they primarily focus on processes, methods, and tools for developing and implementing CBR projects. This special issue of the Journal of Rural Social Sciences builds from that knowledge base, analyzes the outcomes of real-world CBR projects, and assesses learning outcomes for students, faculty, organizations, and community residents. This introduction to the special issue provides an overview of the academic and practical applications of communitybased research that aim to achieve learning outcomes and social change for both university-and communitybased partners. It includes a review of theoretical concepts and methodological approaches comprising CBR, followed by a summary of the articles in this issue.

In this chapter we look at the unique characteristics, processes, methods, challenges and problems associated with the conduct of social research in community settings. The emergence of the 'participatory research' paradigm has challenged researchers to rethink their motives for doing research and to adopt a more needs-driven and problem-oriented approach to conducting research. The need to involve communities in the research process places a set of demands on researchers, generated within the community or context of the research, which reshapes the way that the research process is designed and how it is managed. Having described the emergence of participatory research as a distinctive paradigm and outlined the foundational characteristics of the paradigm, the authors describe the challenges of doing participatory research in societies in democratic transition. They then go on to describe three broad processes in the interaction between researchers and communities. Some uniq...

The diversity of South Africa’s population calls for authentic and contextually relevant participation in research that is community based. For novice researchers and researchers transitioning to participative methods, it can be challenging to facilitate a community-based research (CBR) project if they lack the necessary facilitation skills or experience. These skills are crucial to enable collaborative and participative learning. In this paper, I explain how I learnt to facilitate a participatory action learning and action research (PALAR) project through critical reflection on self and process. I generated data from my personal reflective journal entries and transcripts of our action learning group sessions, and I validated my claims to knowledge by recoding the data with two critical friends, my coauthors of this paper. The claims to knowledge I share in this paper are twofold. Firstly, I have come to know how to improve my facilitation skills and, secondly, I have learnt to use ...
