Llucià, els llibres i el saber

Abstract

Lucian Ind. gives us a lot of information about book trade, publishing and use of books during the Roman Empire. The aim of this paper is to analyse how a pepaideumenos like Lucian understands the use of this cultural support —the book—, considering that the possession and handling of books could be a sign of wealth and culture as well. Therefore, it was a way for the Greek elites to differentiate themselves and to make visible their prestige and education. However, Lucian wants to point out that the purchase of books and similar trivial activities are not necessarily synonym of education and knowledge, at least in relation to the cultural model he stood up for. Key words: Lucian – books – Roman Empire – social satire
