Although qualitative research becomes more widely accepted, however, its role in management studies is still underrepresented. This is because qualitative research requires an understanding of philosophy, terminology and theories which often presents conflicting perspectives. However, it should be noted that various qualitative research approaches started with generic qualitative research, which was considered easier to implement. Therefore, this article is aimed to provide insight into generic qualitative research and explain how to do it.

Management Decision, 2006
PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to present a piece of empirical work that investigates the current role and status of qualitative research within the management field.Design/methodology/approachThe research is based on 45 in‐depth qualitative interviews with members of a range of different stakeholder groups, including: journal editors; qualitative researchers; Doctoral Programme Leaders; practitioners; and those who fund qualitative management research.FindingsThe findings suggest that there is considerable variety in definitions of qualitative research; that there are still a number of issues surrounding the status and credibility of qualitative research within the field; and there is a need for greater access to researcher training in this area.Practical implicationsThe paper is of practical interest to qualitative researchers in that it details some of the issues surrounding publishing qualitative work.Originality/valueThe paper presents original empirical work in this field.

Qualitative Research in Organizations and Management: An International Journal, 2007
PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to report the findings of research which explores how the concept qualitative management research is variably constructed and defined by those who have a direct interest in, and influence upon, important aspects of qualitative management research.Design/methodology/approachInformation was gathered through the use of semi‐structured interviews conducted with 44 individuals who were drawn from four observer‐identified types of “expert” informant who were taken to generally represent key groups of stakeholders in the conduct, evaluation and dissemination of qualitative management research. Interview data from these individuals were analysed though an iterative process using the NVivo software package to inductively generate definitional categories and explore aspects of their interrelationships.FindingsFrom data analysis it was apparent that there are eight different, but often interrelated, ways in which interviewees define qualitative management re...

Qualitative research has been increasingly used in all sciences. In this paper we will discuss about the applications of qualitative research methods in management sciences. The differences between quantitative and qualitative researches will be clarified and the statistical methods which are suitable for such researches will be explored.

1.IntroductionManagement researchers in general prefer to have structure in their research processes owing to the nature of their discipline which tends to involve procedure and organisation. As a result, this pursuit for structure may deter some researchers who prefer a more quantitative means of investigation from using qualitative research designs. However, the rich value attributed to qualitative research is often placed in designs which are emergent in nature and developed relatively flexibly (Clissett, 2008, p.100) with a particular and ambiguous outcome rather than replicable and clearly-defined outcomes (Van Maanen, 1979, p.520) as with quantitative research methodologies. The value is thus attributed to the creation of new theory and knowledge in the discipline or topic and, therefore, could be of value in understanding emerging issues within the discipline of Management Studies, by providing an in-depth understanding into concerns related to people and organisations as well...

Researchers and students in the business field are increasingly turning to qualitative methods to seek answers for complex research questions. Current literature presents a copious number of published qualitative research compared to previous decades, in which qualitative methods serve mainly as an exploratory inquiry toward more comprehensive quantitative studies. Although qualitative research is now widely adopted in both academia and practice, a dearth of germane literature that argues and discusses key challenges in applying qualitative methods continues to compound the scepticism and ambiguity of the research process. Moreover, details on the analysis process gleaned from research articles are often limited and thus offer little to learn from. Qualitative analysis thus resembles a black box, an analogy of intricacy and complexity. In this editorial, we discuss how to define the scope and goals of a qualitative study, examine current literature, and provide practical guidance fo...

International Journal of Management Reviews, 2016
This paper critically reviews commentaries on the evaluation and promotion of qualitative management research. The review identifies two disjunctures: between methodological prescriptions for epistemologically diverse criteria and management journal prescriptions for standardized criteria; and between the culturally dependent production of criteria and their positioning in editorials and commentaries as normative and objective. The authors’ critical social constructionist analysis surfaces underlying positivist assumptions and institutional processes in these commentaries, which they argue are producing (inappropriate) homogeneous evaluation criteria for qualitative research, marginalizing alternative perspectives, and disciplining individual qualitative researchers into particular normative practices. The authors argue that interventions to encourage more qualitative research need to focus as much on editorial, disciplinary and institutional practices as the practices of individual...

In this paper we focus on the definition of the importance of qualitative research in management. The qualitative research has to be systematically well planned and well executed. If it meets these conditions, qualitative research can be as powerful, in fact sometimes more powerful, than quantitative research. This led us to a theoretical overview of analytical tools and features analysis and interpretation of texts within qualitative research.
Purpose -The purpose of this paper is twofold: to understand how and why employee attitudes to change might change over time; and to demonstrate what type of research might best capture this change. Design/methodology/approach -The paper brings together three studies of the same organization, conducted at different times by the same researchers. Findings -Employee attitudes to change in the three episodes are portrayed in terms of the assumptions that seem to underpin them. The first episode is characterized by a challenge to the basic assumptions employees have about their work; the second, by a fragmentation of assumptions according to sub-group; and the third, by the confirmation of a new set of assumptions about what work involves.
