This article reviews fashion criticism in two quality newspapers in the Netherlands in the past 25 years. Modekritiek bepaalt wat mode is of wat niet, en wat in de mode is of wat niet. Modekritiek zit in de lift, maar er is nog weinig wetenschappelijk onderzoek naar gedaan. Het eerste deel van dit artikel van Anneke Smelik samen met Rosanne de Goffau bevat een overzicht van de stand van zaken in de internationale modekritiek. Het tweede deel is een verslag van een kwantitatief onderzoek naar modekritiek in NRC Handelsblad en de Volkskrant van 1985 tot 2010, dat studente Rosanne de Goffau heeft uitgevoerd voor haar masterscriptie (2019). Van de modekritiek in NRC Handelsblad heeft zij ook een kwalitatieve analyse gemaakt. Daarmee geeft het artikel inzicht in het academische discours over modekritiek en schetst het de ontwikkeling van de modekritiek in serieuze Nederlandse dagbladen over een recente periode van 25 jaar. How did women determine their attitude towards the transforming nation-state at the end of the 19th century? What stylistic strategies did they use and what were the consequences for the political power relations between the sexes? These questions form the guiding principle for the book "A Fatherland for Women". In this richly illustrated - partly English - collection, the National Exhibition of Women's Labor in 1898 is the starting point. The first part discusses the history of the (inter)national industrial exhibitions and makes clear how important contacts between women from different countries were in the design of women's exhibitions. Despite national differences, certain similarities between these manifestations are striking. The articles in the other three parts deal with themes that received a lot of attention at the Hague Women’s Exhibition: social care and labor; colonial relationships; secondary and higher education. A special photo section shows replicas of the postcards produced during the 1898 Exhibition, showing the exhibition building, the display of objects, working-class at work during the exhibition, the colonial display of a Javanese village and a photo of the Surinamese woman Lousie Yda.

As the author of the famous Psychopathia sexualis (1886), the German-Austrian psy¬chiatrist and sexologist Richard von Krafft-Ebing played a key role in the medical construction of the modern concept of sexuali¬ty. The contention that medical theories, such as Krafft-Ebing's, brought about the construction of perversions and sexual identities, does not mean that these were invented from nothing. The making of sexual subjects should not be seen as the result of medical interferen¬ce with deviance only. Medicalization can be viewed as a process in which new meanings were attached to existing behaviours, feelings and self-understanding. In Krafft-Ebings work these new meanings were dominated not so much by biological as psychological interpretations. Case histories and autobiographies of Krafft-Ebing's patients show that psychological explanations were developed in the context of existing social practices and with the collaboration of the people concerned. They often furnished him with the life stories and sexual experiences on which medical explanations were grounded.

Verslaving, 2011

Inleiding Mannen en vrouwen hebben in biologisch, psychosociaal en cultureel opzicht een andere levensgeschiedenis. Wanneer verslaving daarin een rol gaat spelen, kan dat niet los gezien worden van die specifieke context (Galanter & Kleber, 2004). Om tot een doeltreffende behandeling voor vrouwen te komen, moeten we de ervaring en impact van het leven als vrouw in een mangebaseerde maatschappij-met andere woorden: gender-als klinisch perspectief nemen (Straussner & Brown, 2002). Recent onderzoek toont significante verschillen tussen de geslachten wat betreft (stofgerelateerde) epidemiologie, biologische reacties en medische gevolgen, comorbide psychiatrische stoornissen, sociale factoren en drempels tot behandeling (Tuchman, 2010). Verslaving behelst een complex samenspel van biopsychosociale factoren. Onderliggende oorzaken en correlaten verdienen de aandacht. Om goede zorg aan drugsverslaafde vrouwen te verlenen, is een genderspecifiek hulpverleningsaanbod noodzakelijk. Vanuit dit oogpunt-met aandacht voor de onderliggende oorzaken en correlaten van verslaving bij vrouwen-willen wij onze praktijkervaring met u delen en geïntegreerde strategieën en richtlijnen voor behandeling omschrijven, gebaseerd op onderzoek en de klinische praktijk. Tot slot pleiten we voor meer onderzoek om de beschreven methoden zowel te staven als te verbeteren. Etiologie en risicofactoren Mannelijke en vrouwelijke organismen verschillen zowel in bouw als in chemische make-up, zo ook wanneer het gaat om verslavend gedrag, het lichaam en de hersenen (Briggs & Pepperell, 2009). * N.
