The Making of Arab British fiction As part of its twenty-fifth anniversary in Autumn 2009, Wasafiri, the British Arts Council-funded magazine of international contemporary writing, published a special issue with contributions from a galaxy of predominantly British-connected authors and academics, evidencing the striking growth in the list of "non-White" writing in English from the early 1980s onward. 1 In one of its features, authors Ahdaf Soueif (b. 1950) and Jamal Mahjoub (b. 1960) discuss familiar topics, such as the recent Cairo book fair, East versus West and the so-called "clash of civilizations, " and donning the hijab and niqab by younger Muslim women. Both agree that writing in English, rather than Arabic, was not a choice for either of them, since both were schooled and did most of their early reading in that language. As Mahjoub puts it, "we do seem to be part of what feels like a growing community of Arab writers who write in English" (Mahjoub 2009, 60). While their close connection to countries in the Arab world (Egypt for Soueif, Sudan for Mahjoub) and the range of topics covered in their fiction embeds much of their work within a specifically Arab-Islamic framing, both writers-especially Soueif-claim an international readership. The forum hosting them and the confident tones in which their discussion is articulated proclaim them writers whose rightful place is within "world literature"-a category which in her keynote article Maya Jaggi privileges above the "postcolonial" for its inclusivity that embraces "all the literatures of the world, in all languages" (Jaggi 2009, 18). The implied message of all three is that writers of world literature are not to be ghettoized. 2 Yet in spite of its autonomy, or perhaps because of it, the premise that much international English writing is a form of "writing back" to a Western metropolitan center is not so easily dismissed. Since Chinua Achebe accosted them, in spite of the super-vening years Joyce Carys and Joseph Conrads are apparently still needed by some Arab Anglophone writers. The paper discusses the literary osmosis between Arab culture and English literature, more precisely it subtracts the issue of influencing and being influenced between the writers in the two cultures. As it shows the influencing on the Iraqi poet Badr Shaker Alsayab by the British poet T. S. Eliot, it also shows the influencing on Lord Alfred Tennyson by the Arabian poet Imru al-Qays. Many of Arab influences in the English literature are raised in this paper, in poetry also it discusses the influencing on the father of English poetry Geoffrey Chaucer by the Arabian Nights tales. In the novel, it discusses the influencing on Daniel Defoe's novel Robinson Crusoe by the novel of Ibn Tufayl's Hayy Ibn Yaqzan. In drama it discusses the influencing of the famous story in the Arab culture of the hero and beau Antar Bin Shadad on the great poet and playwright William Shakespeare especially in his play Othello, more comparisons are discussed in this paper. At the end of the study, we conclude that the modern Arabic literature influenced by English literature, the English literature is also influenced by the Arab literature in the middle ages. The Arabian Nights was influential on many writers in the English literature. The mainspring of the influence on English writers caused a renewal and development of English literature. The translation movement helped to make the Arab culture influential on the civilizations around, including the influencing on the English literature. The Orientalists contributed to transfer the Arab Culture to Europe via translation of the Arab literature to their languages, and more other results are mentioned in the conclusion of the paper based on the literature .

The English medieval literary depiction distorted the image of Arabs. Some literary portraits of the Arabs have depicted Arabs as tyrant caliphs, weak kings, lustful princes, medieval Saracens, mysterious travellers, filthy Bedouins, and immoral women. Modern English Orientalists work to explore the Arabian characters with reference to Islam. Islamist Arabs are represented as a threat to the West. In the aim of achieving greater visibility, too many Arab literary texts have been translated into English. Actually, this work gives focus on the post-colonial era in which too many literary works were produced but the western orientalists and academics continued to consider them as worthless and worked to spread stereotypes until a wave of translations in the Arab literature took place. This paper shows how the orientalist notion that modern Arab literature is not a literature by itself but a social documentary, proved to be untrue through the remarkable translated texts which achieved repute and success inside as well as outside the Arab boundaries.
This paper is a study of novels written by Arab American writers in an attempt to analyze how such works of fiction portray the life of Arab Americans in a post-9/11 America. The paper shows how Arab Americans deal with the consequences of 9/11, and it also reflects several other aspects that characterize Arab American writing as an emerging post-9/11 new voice. It investigates the role of Anglophone Arab fiction in paving the way for more intercultural understanding and attempting to de-orientalize the Arab. Some writers often try to negotiate with the American culture in order to arrive at an identity that incorporates multiple elements from both the culture of origin and the host culture. Hybrid and cosmopolitan in their approach, such writers also attempt to be cultural mediators, and they show growing concern about subverting the normative judgment and stereotypical images that have fixed the Arab American.
