Paper presents details of the project “Europeana libraries: Aggregating digital content from Europe’s libraries” with special focus on participation of University library “Svetozar Markovic” in it. This CIP-Best Practice Network ICT-PSP project brought together 24 institutions including some of Europe’s leading research libraries from 11 countries. During the two years’ course of the project 2011-2013 with participation and support of LIBER, CERL, CENL and Europeana foundation, partnering institutions aim to build the library aggregator for Europeana and create infrastructure that will allow for ingestion into Europeana of digital materials from other research libraries across the Europe after 2013. University library “Svetozar Markovic” is the only partner in the project from a non-EU country and the region of SE Europe. Two important collections comprising 160.000 pages of old and rare books from Ottoman collection and collection on Alexander the Great will be made available to international patrons through Europeana as a result of participation of University library “Sve-tozar Markovic” in this project. Librarians from Belgrade will be partnering with colleagues from Europe on developing new metadata standard EDM (Europeana Data Model) and enhancing full-text searching capabilities and features of Europeana. Other libraries in the region will be profiting from the participation of University library “Svetozar Markovic” in this project since one of the important aims is to create aggregator for research libraries of Western Balkan countries. In the course of achieving this, research libraries from the region will be getting help on kick-starting their digitization projects, creating digital repositories and preparing metadata for ingestion into Europeana.

The Manuscriptorium Digital Library provides access to catalogue data, fully digitized documents, and selected structured full texts from more than thirty various memory institutions in country and abroad. It is the largest digital library of manuscripts operated by any national library in Europe. Thanks to the new EU project ENRICH. Manuscriptorium, as a product based on 15 years of cooperation of the Czech National Library and AiP Beroun Co. Ltd., will try to aggregate similar information from many countries in Europe to provide seamless access to already dispersed historical documents. The works on which the Manuscriptorium is based were the main reason why the National Library of the Czech Republic was awarded the UNESCO Memory of the World prize in 2005 as the first institution ever. The paper gives an overview of plans and goals to be achieved during the coming two years. When in 1992, a few people from the National Library and the company whose today’s name is AiP Beroun Ltd....
Abstract. LIBER, CERL and CELN have teamed up with The Europeana foundation in order to implement the project “Europeana libraries”. This CIP ICT PSP project started in January 2011 and by 2013 a brand new library aggregator of Europeana will be operational and 5 million new items will be added to the digital portal of the European cultural heritage. To achieve these goals, twenty-five partners across Europe, including some of the oldest and most famed university and public libraries of the continent, will be aggregating research library content for Europeana, extending The European Library aggregation infrastructure and enhancing searchability of existing library contents of Europeana. New metadata model – EDM Europeana Data Model) will be developed, and it will allow for enhanced possibilities in describing composite objects. Dissemination activities will be fostering usage of Europeana and promoting the Open Access principle that is the basis for Europeana operations. University library “Svetozar Markovic”, the only partner in the Europeana libraries project from a non-EU state, is a firm proponent of the Open Access principle and had joined the project in order to contribute to furthering of this principle by making digital content of academic libraries accessible to the vast audience of Europeana. The particular aim this library will try to achieve in the course of the project is creation of the library aggregator for university libraries of the Western Balkans countries.
In 2007, the Government of the Republic of Slovenia designated in the Strategy of Information Soci-ety Development in the Republic of Slovenia – si2010 the vision and defined the goal of e-content development – to ensure access to the e-contents in the Slovenian language in all fields that significantly influence the life and work of an individual. In the field of culture accelerated digitisation of existing analogue content, inclusion into the European digital cultural space and further development of the Digital Library of Slovenia have been espe-cially stressed. In 2006, the National and University Library (NUK) established the Digital Library Development and Strategy Division, which manages all digital library processes and procedures. Being the result of collaboration of professional organizations, universities and research libraries from several countries, the Digital Library "Europeana" aims to make available online the cultural heritage, anywhere, anytime, in the virtual environment of the Internet. The Library of the "Lucian Blaga" University of Sibiu has participated in recent years to the most important digital projects regarding Europeana. Working together with the most important university researching libraries, the library team accumulated valuable experience and has established processes for developing digital content ranged from multiple sources, of different data standards. It was also our mission and honour to promote and disseminate through this projects, the Romanian local cultural heritage.
Digital Library of Romania -national pendant of Europeana, 2020
The importance of the protection of cultural heritage is recognized as an international priority. In Romania, although the significance of sharing resources with patrimonial value was-and still is-unanimously recognized, the digitization process has been a difficult one, the restoration of the cultural heritage being conditioned mainly by the financial possibilities. Thus, the digitization process began with isolated, small projects. In 2008, when the Europeana.eu cultural portal was launched (at that time, offered access to about 4.5 million digital objects), in our country the first feasibility study on digitization, digital preservation and online accessibility was barely done. Digitizing the national cultural heritage does not mean just easy access to culture for Romanians, digital objects are also among the best ambassadors of our culture. Awareness of this fact has led to the birth of the E-culture project-the Digital Library of Romania-a much discussed and delayed project, which received funding in 2018. The purpose of this paper is to provide a comprehensive picture of the state of digitization of the national cultural heritage. It is an evolutionary presentation of the digitization process, including the analysis of the European framework, the enumeration of the institutions with coordinating role and of the significant projects in the field. The focus will be on presenting the largest Romanian digitization project until now: the Digital Library of Romania, as well as its importance in the European context.

In the context of information globalization Romanian libraries must define their unit role in society, namely to capitalize on and preserve the national intellectual heritage by organizing, processing, access, preservation of national documentary heritage in various types of media. Promoted principles, like the principle of freedom of information and universal access to information, preserving national intellectual heritage, intellectual property rights, sharing information and documentation resources, promoting the role of libraries and librarians in society, promoting specific legislation, promoting national and international professional cooperation, promoting a multicultural and multilingual information context and new models of information and documentation, all these are milestones that any info-documentary structure must take into account. The basic objective of digital library initiatives in Romania has been to preserve the culture and heritage of this country being still in early stage.
European memory institutions possess valuable cultural heritage collections that contribute to research and education, social and cultural integration of the European countries and regions. Bringing cultural heritage online is a multilayered activity, a mix of political, technological, managerial and other decisions. The aim of this paper is to concentrate on technological and management issues of cultural heritage in the European national libraries. Technological aspects of cultural heritage management determine their level of preparedness to implement large-scale digital library initiatives. Management aspects reveal their potential for the European collaboration and networking. This paper is based on the survey of cultural heritage management in the European national libraries that was performed in the context of TEL-ME-MOR project (http://www.telmemor.net/), funded by the European Commission under the 6 th Framework Programme. There are several major findings. Strategic prioriti...

BACKGROUND The late 1980s was a time of major historical change in Europe as significant political events reshaped its boundaries once again. It was a time of optimism suffused with a desire for enlightened thinking and action in a European context. The genesis of the Consortium of European Research Libraries (CERL) arose from this time as European librarians and scholars began to consider the rich scope of historical printed collections across the whole of Europe, and to realize that technology now offered a powerful new tool to harness information about the contents of these collections, and make them more readily available to scholars and other users nationally and internationally. As Klaus-Dieter Lehmann (1966) has pointed out, 'Books have played a decisive role at major turning points in European history.' What had been until then a time-consuming and often laborious quest by ALEXANDRIA, 17(1),2005 Ann Matheson became Chairman of the Consortium of European Research Libraries in 2000. Educated at the Universities ofSt Andrews and Edinburgh, she worked until 2000 in the National Library ofScotland, Edinburgh. She has been involved with research library cooperation in Scotland through the Scottish Confederation of University and Research Libraries, and in the wider UK through programmes such as NEWSPLAN. She was General Secretary of the Ligue des Bibliotheques Europeennes de Recherche (UBER) from 1994 to 2000. Her research interests are in the eighteenth century, and she has contributed articles to a wide range ofscholarly andprofessional journals.

The paper presents part of the Tempus project "New Library Services at Western Balkan Universities" (coordinated by the University library "Svetozar Marković" in Belgrade from 2010 up to now), whose one of two main objectives is to establish digital repositories on the 6 universities of the Western Balkan (three countries: Serbia, Montenegro and Bosnia and Herzegovina). The repositories are based on the same system-PHAIDRA, created, developed and launched in 2006. by University library in Vienna, which is one of the partner in the Project. PHAIDRA is system designed for long term archiving and managing of different types of digital objects; legislation about copyright protection is included in the system and can be easily applied. The repository of the University of Belgrade, with all necessary adjustments (language, university structure, classification system, etc.), became the leading model for all other repositories. Dissemination of information about repositories is started at the University library for several groups of faculty librarians, who participated one day training about the functioning of the system. Training of librarians is also the first step in connecting with teaching staff of those faculties. The Rectorate of the University of Belgrade gave institutional support to this Project: by signing the Berlin Declaration on Open Access to Knowledge in the Science and Humanities, rector emphasized that PHAIDRA repository is established accordingly to this decision and invited professors, researchers and others to publish their scientific work within this repository and to make it visible worldwide.
Digital libraries are frequently treated just as a new method of storage of digitized artifacts, with all consequences of transferring long-established ways of dealing with physical objects into the digital world. Such attitude improves availability, but often neglects other opportunities offered by global and immediate access, virtuality and linking — as easy as never before. The article presents the idea of transforming a conventional digital library into knowledge source and research collaboration platform, facilitating content augmentation, interpretation and co-operation of geographically distributed researchers representing different academic fields. This concept has been verified by the process of extending descriptions stored in thematic Digital Library of Polish and Poland-related Ephemeral Prints from the 16th, 17th and 18th Centuries with extended item-associated information provided by historians, philologists, librarians and computer scientists. It resulted in associati...
In 2008 BCU Cluj started digitizing its special collections and periodical materials with basic tools and methodology. Since the early period the digitization laboratory grew and gained valuable experiences. It developed a workflow that enables us to manage and track every step of the digitization. DSpace software was implemented to help manage library collections and to enable us a possible connection to the Europeana digital library. The challenges and the solutions of the implementation of this open source software are described here. The paper also discusses the possibilities that the institutions with digital collection can have in providing access to the electronic materials as a new library service.

Background The article presents, from a diachronic perspective, the concerns of valorization and preservation of the documentary heritage through digitisation projects in the Romanian Library System. The development of the argument is made starting from the analysis of the interest in the subject in international literature (through a bibliometric analysis) and the investigation of the online presence of libraries expressed statistically from the typology of forms of representation, to specific digital products and services, thus highlighting how they evolved in the sense of diversifying and modernizing the products and services provided and taking into account the political, economic, and technological constraints. Methods The evaluation of the involvement of Romanian libraries in digitisation activities was done through the such research methods as content analysis and scientometric research, which allowed the carrying out of a longitudinal case study extended for the period 2007–2022, during the unravelling of the events. Results The most representative initiatives for the creation of the Digital Library of Romania and the involvement of libraries in national and European projects are presented, and examples of good practices are highlighted, including political and administrative concerns to support protection and capitalization through the digitisation of the libraries’ heritage. This study is the first in Romanian specialized bibliography that proovides an overall and evolutionary perspective on the national project of digitisation of the documentary cultural heritage. Analyzing a large number of official documents and library web addresses has been a major challenge. Conclusions During the analyzed period (2007–2022), there have been numerous initiatives and digitisation projects, but the results have not always met expectations. From the experience of Romanian libraries, it can be concluded that digital content development initiatives have not always been successful because of the absence or insufficient commitment of the sustainability component.

Access to distributed and heterogeneous Internet resources is coming up as one of the major problem for future development of the next generation of Digital Libraries. Available data sources vary in terms of data representation and access interfaces, therefore a system for federating heterogeneous resources accessible via the Web is considered to be a crucial aspect in digital libraries research and development. Libraries as well as institutions and enterprises are struggling to find solutions that can offer the final user an easy and automatic way to rapidly find relevant needed resources among heterogeneous ones.

Europeana is a pan-European metadata aggregator of information about cultural heritage objects published on-line by various European memory institutions. Since February 2011 Europeana publicly exposes API, which main purpose is to provide easier access to the Europeana data. During the pilot stage of the API deployment, cooperation between Poznan Supercomputing and Networking Center and Europeana Foundation was established to create prototype API-based applications for two PSNC's services. This cooperation was later extended to co- organize Polish edition of Hack4Europe event in June 2011- one of the four hackathons aimed to show the potential of open cultural heritage data. The objective of this paper is to present a case study of the adoption of the Europeana API in a country scale digital libraries infrastructure in Poland and also to describe the results of the Polish edition of the Europeana API hackathon.
