A Nanoemulgel is a topical gel that contains a nanoemulsion dispersed within a gel matrix. The nanoemulsion is typically prepared using high shear mixing techniques and contains droplets of oil. The droplets size of nanoemulsion was in range of of 28 to 500nm. The sizes were confirmed by dynamic light scattering method. Nano-emulgel is an emerging drug delivery system intended to enhance the therapeutic profile of lipophilic drugs. Lipophilic formulations have a variety of limitations, which includes poor solubility, unpredictable absorption, and low oral bioavailability. Nano-emulgel, an amalgamated preparation of different systems aims to deal with these limitations. The novel system prepared by the incorporation of nano-emulsion into gel improves stability and enables drug delivery for both immediate and controlled release. Nanoemulgel improves the stability of a nanoemulsion formulation by lowering surface and interfacial tension, which increases the aqueous phase viscosity. Bec...

The lipophilic nature of majority of newly developed drugs has resulting in poor bioavailability, and pharmacokinetic variations. The goal of this evaluation is to evaluate and report the current potential and future scope of nanoemulgel formulation for becoming an effective delivery system for poorly water-soluble drugs. Nanoemulgel consist two different systems in which drug containing nanoemulsionis incorporated into a gel base. The fusion of these two systems makes this formulation advantageous in several ways. Lipophilic drugs can be easily incorporated and the skin permeability of the incorporated drugs can be enhanced in several folds due to the finely distributed oil droplets in gel phase. Simultaneously, it can be targeted more specifically to the site of action and can avoid first pass metabolism and relieve the user from gastric/systemic incompatibilities. The nanoemulgel drug delivery system is a formulation related intervention to improve drug absorption and therapeutic profile of lipophilic drugs. An increasing trend in nanoemulgel use in recent years has been noticed because of the better acceptability of the preparation to the patients due to their non-greasy, convenience spreadability, and easy applicability and good therapeutic and safety profile. Despite having few limitations, nanoemulgel formulation can be considered as potential and promising candidates for topical delivery of lipophilic drugs in the future.

Being an emerging transdermal delivery tool, nanoemulgel, has proved to show surprising upshots for the lipophilic drugs over other formulations. This lipophilic nature of majority of the newer drugs developed in this modern era resulting in poor oral bioavailability, erratic absorption and pharmacokinetic variations. Therefore, this novel transdermal delivery system has been proved to be advantageous over other oral and/or topical drug delivery to avoid such disturbances. These nanoemulgels are basically oil-in-water nanoemulsions gelled with the use of some gelling agent in it. This gel phase in the formulation is non-greasy which favors user compliance and stabilize the formulation through reduction in surface as well as interfacial tension. Simultaneously, it can be targeted more specifically to the site of action and can avoid first pass metabolism and relieve the user from gastric/systemic incompatibilities. This brief review is focused on nanoemulgel as a better topical drug ...

Every year many drug molecules discovered to be effective in treatment of many diseases, however not all of these drugs succeed in reaching the market. One of the main reasons for such failure is the lipophilicity or low water solubility of these chemicals which results in poor bioavailability. Nanoemulsion has the ability to deliver these drugs in an efficient way. Nanoemulsion, which is usually o/w emulsion can incorporate this lipophilic drug into nanolipoidal droplets. However, the difficulty in applying liquid dosage form can be overcome by using nanoemulgel system. Nanoemulgel considered as a suitable way to deliver lipophilic drugs through topical route. This review tries to highlight the importance of nanoemulgel as a drug delivery system. The components of the systems have been explored and the methods of preparations including high energy methods and low energy methods have been discussed. Different methods were used in characterization of such delivery system; all of these methods and techniques were reviewed briefly. Finally, the recent researches about different applications of emulgel in local delivery or systemic delivery has been discussed. To conclude, the nanoemulgel applications in drug delivery is very promising and many products will find their way to the markets soon.
Many advantages of gels a major limitation is in the delivery of hydrophobic drugs. So to overcome this limitation an emulsion based approach is being used so that even a hydrophobic therapeutic moiety can enjoy the unique properties of gels. When gels and emulsions are used in combined form the dosage form are referred as emulgel. In recent years, there has been great interest in the use of novel polymers. A unique aspect of dermatological pharmacology is the direct accessibility of the skin as a target organ for diagnosis and treatment. The combination of hydrophilic cornified cells in hydrophobic intercellular material provides a barrier to both hydrophilic and hydrophobic substances. Emulgel are having major advantages on novel vesicular systems as well as on conventional systems considering various aspects. Numerous permeation enhancers can potentiate the effect of decreasing skin barrier resistance on the other hand promoting solubility of the drug in vehicle is also feasible....

The anti-inflammatory drugs that are generally available possess the disadvantage of hydrophobicity, which leads to poor permeability and erratic bioavailability. Nanoemulgels (NEGs) are novel drug delivery systems that aim to improve the solubility and permeability of drugs across the biological membrane. The nano-sized droplets in the nanoemulsion enhance the permeation of the formulation, along with surfactants and co-surfactants that act as permeation enhancers and can further improve permeability. The hydrogel component of NEG helps to increase the viscosity and spreadability of the formulation, making it ideal for topical application. Moreover, oils that have anti-inflammatory properties, such as eucalyptus oil, emu oil and clove oil, are used as oil phases in the preparation of the nanoemulsion, which shows a synergistic effect with active moiety and enhances its overall therapeutic profile. This leads to the creation of hydrophobic drugs that possess enhanced pharmacokinetic...

Topical delivery systems for drugs make localized administration of the drug anywhere in the body through ophthalmic, vaginal, skin and rectal routes. Topical formulations encompass a wide variety of formulations intended for cosmetic or dermatological application, to healthy as well as diseased skin. Drugs may be administered for localized or systemic effect. Topical preparations can be formulated with varying physico-chemical properties, as solid, semisolid or liquid. Microemulsion of drug is prepared and incorporated into emulgel, having novel topical drug delivery system as dual release control system. Micro-emulsions are micronized; thermodynamically stable systems having low interfacial tension prepared by adding co-surfactant have several features like enhanced permeability, good thermodynemic stability and prolong release. Emulgel prolongs the drug release, increases patient compliance and stability of emulsion. The prepared emulgel is evaluated for various parameteres like pH, viscosity, globule size; spreadability etc. whereas micro-emulsion is evaluated for various parameters like viscosity, pH, zeta-potential etc.

Background: Topical drug delivery system is dosage forms which are applied directly to the skin to cure various diseases. When we compare all the semisolid preparation for topical drug delivery, gels have been extensively used in cosmetics as well as pharmaceutical preparations. The major drawback of gels is in delivery of hydrophobic drugs which can be overcome by using emulgels. The dosage forms where gel and emulsion are combined together are known as emulgel. Emulgel is one of the modern technologies in novel drug delivery system for topical use having properties of dual control release i.e. emulsion and gel. Methods: In emulgel drug delivery system drugs are incorporated into globules which are then dispersed resulting in the formation of emulsion which is then mixed with the gel base. Results: It was seen that emulgels are better topical drug delivery systems compared to others owing to its advantages such as greaseless, smooth, homogeneous texture, glossy appearance, transparent, pH equivalent to pH of skin, high drug content and sustained release. Conclusion: This review article focuses on emulgel including its properties and formulation considerations with characterization parameters proving that emulgels are one of the most effective and convenient drug delivery systems.
