Pain is the feeling of a lack of good regarding life and vital functions. If it is present in the human person in a serious degree, and it is irremediable, it appears as incomprehensible and insuperable. According to Hegel, the meaning of pain lies in the negativity of the spirit. Pain is a consequence of the dialectical movement of being, therefore it is installed in God himself. Leonardo Polo holds the unintelligibility of human suffering. The human person not only suffers, but her very existence is painful. Its ultimate root is sin. Only Christ’s passion makes meaningful human pain, because in the Cross pain and voluntary evil are defeated by love.
