He passionately desired independence for the Philippines from Spain, so that Filipinos would not be subjected to the control of another country. He was unconcerned about himself. He was more concerned with assisting his country. He aspired to make his country proud of him. Rizal was also a brilliant person. He was capable of doing a wide range of tasks and spoke 23 languages fluently. He also offered assistance to others in need. Rizal put in a lot of effort into everything he did. June 19, 1861, the Mercado Family of Calamba, Laguna Province, Philippines, gladly welcomed the birth of their newest member, a baby boy born as the seventh child to happy parents Francisco Rizal Mercado y Alejandro and Teodora Alonza y Quintos. Jose Protacio Rizal Mercado was the name given to the joyful infant boy. Being the seventh of a brood of 11, Jose Rizal Mercado demonstrated an astounding intelligence and aptitude for learning at a really young age when he learned his letters from his mother and will read and write at the age of 5. Education was a priority for the Mercado family and young Jose Protacio was sent to find out from Justiniano Aquino Cruz, a teacher from nearby Binan, Laguna.
