In the previous results, we developed an effective products to apply as functional foods for overcome of radiation damage and reduction of side effects in radiotherapy. To verify the prevention of UVB-induced immunosuppression of immune cell function by HemoHIM, we studied on the mechanism of the skin immune function for the protection in UVB irradiation. In studies presented here, we showed that HemoHIM can prevent UVB-induced impairment of skin immune cell function by in vitro and in vivo assay. Exposure of freshly cultured murine dendritic cells (DCs) with IL-4/GM-CSF to UVB irradiation resulted in impairment of accessory function. This suppression could be prevented by addition of HemoHIM before or after to the cultures of UVB-irradiated DCs. We also tested the effects of HemoHIM on the suppression of contact hypersensitivity (CHS) treated oral or intraperitoneal administration. This UVB-suppressed CHS was prevented by administration of HemoHIM to UVB-irradiated mice. These results suggest that HemoHIM may prevent UVB-induced immune suppression in the skin.

This research study was to develop methods for inhibiting the germination of cotton seeds. Germination rates after heating treatment at 80℃ with 10, 20, 30, 40 min. were 9.3, 9.3, 5.3 and 1.3 percentage, respectively. Heat treatment over 85℃ with 10 min. caused no germination of cotton seeds. Germination was significantly reduced with gamma rays treatment more than 10,000 gy, while the treatment within 2,000-8,000 gy induced less effects. Microwave processing for 30 seconds and 60 seconds inhibit the germination of cotton seed under 8 and 0%, respectively. As a physical treatment, rollmill milling with 1.5, 2, 2.5 mm gap inhibited any germination of cotton seeds. The optimum gap of roll-mill for processing physical cracking was below 51% of the thickness of seed.

Agar is a cell wall component of macro red algae that can be hydrolyzed by agarase. Agarases are classified into α-agarase (E.C. 3.2.1.158) and β-agarase (E.C. 3.2.1.81), in accordance with their cleavage pattern, and can be grouped in the glycoside hydrolase (GH)-16,-58,-86,-96, and-118 family according to the amino acid sequences of the proteins. Many agarases and/or their genes have been detected, isolated, and recombinantly expressed from bacteria, and metagenomes have their origins in sea and terrestrial environments. Products of agarases, agarooligosaccharides and neoagarooligosaccharides, represent wide functions such as antitumor, immune stimulation, antioxidation, prebiotic, hepa-protective, antibacterial, whitening, and moisturizing effects; hence, broad applications would be possible in the food industry, cosmetics, and medical fields. In addition, agarases are also used as a tool enzyme for research. This paper reviews the sources, purifications and detection methods, and application fields of agarases. The role of agarases in agar metabolism and the function of their enzymatic products are also surveyed.

This study was conducted to elucidate the effect of light sources and explant types on in vitro shoot multiplication and rooting of a rare and endangered plant Abeliophyllum distichum. Both apical buds and axillary buds were used as explants under 4 different light sources, cool white florescent light (F), 100% blue light-emitting diode (LED) (B), 50% blue and 50% red LED mixture (BR), and 100% red LED (R). Clear difference was observed in terms of shoot proliferation by light sources types but not by position-dependent explant types. Multiple shoot induction rates were enhanced under both B and BR light sources. Spontaneous rooting was induced in shoot induction medium under B light source. Both the rates of rooting and numbers of roots per explant were higher in apical bud explants compared to axillary bud explants. Interestingly R light source stimulated shoot elongation but inhibited root development. Therefore, our results suggest that the use of apical bud explants under B or BR light sources is suitable for in vitro micropropagation of a rare and endangered plant species, Abeliophyllum distichum.

An 8-week feeding experiment was conducted to evaluate three types of squid Sepia esculenta liver powder (SLP) as a dietary protein source for replacement of fish meal (FM) in the juvenile black rockfish, Sebastes schlegeli. For replacement of FM, six experimental diets were formulated with 5 or 10% of either of three types (A, B, C) of SLP: SLP-A 5 , SLP-A 10 , SLP-B 5 , SLP-B 10 , SLP-C 5 , and SLP-C 10. One of the control diets contained 100% FM as the protein source, and the other was a commercial diet (Com). Fish with an average body weight of 6.50 0.03 g (mean SD) were allocated randomly in triplicate groups of 50 to aquaria and fed the experimental diets until satiation. The weight gain (WG) and specific growth rate (SGR) of fish fed the FM, SLP-A 5 , SLP-A 10 , and SLP-B 5 diets were higher than those of fish fed the Com, SLP-B 10 , SLP-C 5 and SLP-C 10 diets. No significant differences were observed in WG and SGR among the diet groups, with the exception of the SLP-C 10 diet group. The feed efficiency (FE) and protein efficiency ratio (PER) of fish fed the SLP-A 5 , SLP-A 10 , and SLP-B 5 diets did not differ from those fed the control diet. However, fish fed SLP-B 10 and SLP-C 10 had lower FE and PER than the fish fed the FM, commercial, SLP-A 5, SLP-A 10, and SLP-B 5 diets. Both the SLP-A and SLP-B diets, but not the SLP-C diets, replaced up to 10% and 5% of FM for juvenile black rockfish, respectively. The results of this experiment provide information that will assist in formulating an inexpensive and practical diet containing SLP for juvenile black rockfish.

Epoxy kraft lignin (EKL) was prepared by substituting the hydroxyl groups of kraft lignin with epoxide groups. Subsequently, 3,4-dihydroxybenzylamine (DHBA) was introduced to the prepared EKL substituted with DHBA (EKL-DHBA) to impart antioxidant and ultraviolet (UV) light blocking properties. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and 1 H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy confirmed that the DHBA moiety had been grafted successfully onto the lignin macromolecule. Additionally, 31 P NMR analysis revealed that EKL-DHBA had a higher content of phenolic hydroxyl groups than KL, owing to catechol structure substitution. EKL-DHBA/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) films were prepared and their antioxidant and UV blocking properties were investigated. The antioxidant activity of the film prepared adding 1 wt.% of EKL-DHBA was 93.15%, which was higher than that of ethanol soluble kraft lignin (EL). Furthermore, the EKL-DHBA/ PVA film exhibited excellent UV blocking properties of approximately 96.75%-86.12% in UV-B (280-320 nm) and 86.12% in UV-A (280-400 nm) regions. Thus, the UV blocking properties of the EKL-DHBA/PVA film was much higher than that of EL or PVA film.

Anthocyanins are water-soluble plant pigments that give rise to the red, purple, or blue colors observed in many crops. Especially purple pigment of colored rice represent biological activities has been an increased interest, due to the functional meal as a staple food. These health benefits have been attributed to antioxidant property of anthocyanin. However, there have been little genetic source for development of new and various colored rice variety. A recently developed new variety, 'Jungmo1020', showed an unique characteristic of blue color of rice grain hull. We identified the pigment petunidin-3-O-glucoside (Pt-3-G) as a major compound with a value of 176.3±2.3 mg/100 g (68.3%) from 80% MeOH with 1% HCl extracts by UPLC/MS/MS. The content of Pt-3-G in the extracts using a solvent of 100% MeOH with 1% HCl was the highest with the values of 183.8±2.5 mg/100 g. In addition, these extracts showed excellent antioxidatative activities by DPPH and ABTs assay.

Cement has been traditionally used as a main binding material of high ductile fiber reinforced cementitious composites. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the feasibility of using alkali-activated slag and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fibers for manufacturing high ductile fiber reinforced cementless composites. Two mixture proportions with proper flowability and mortar viscosity for easy fiber mixing and uniform fiber dispersion were selected based on alkali activators. Then, the slump flow, compression, uniaxial tension and bending tests were performed on the mixes to evaluate the basic properties of the composites. The cementless composites showed an average slump flow of 465 mm and tensile strain capacity of approximately 2% of due to formation of multiple micro-cracks. Test results demonstrated a feasibility of manufacturing high ductile fiber reinforced composites without using cement.

This study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of two different formulations and application timings of benzobicyclon+penoxsulam+pyrzaosulfuron-ethyl (BPP) in rice field. BPP granule (GR) and tablet (TB) controlled more than 90% of four weed species 10 and 15 days after sowing in direct seeding when compared with untreated control. BPP TB was highly effective to control herbicide resistant Scirpus juncoides and Monochoria vaginalis both 10 and 15 days after transplanting (DAT). BPP GR controlled 94.0 and 96.5% of S. juncoides and M. vaginalis, respectively 10 DAT, but its efficacy decreased to 88.5 and 49.8% respectively 15 DAT. When compared with untreated control, no visual injuries were detected at 255 and 510 g a.i./ha of BPP. The yield of rice increased in both BPP GR and TB in transplanting and direct seeding rice cultivation when compared with untreated control. Based on these data, early application (10 DAT) of BPP GR and TB can be applied to provide effective weed control, especially in the field infested with herbicide resistant weed species.

We aimed to provide the basic data for the development of a beverage using the juices from bioresources from Jeju. Our results show that pH and o Bx of the bioresources ranged 2.0-6.5 and 3.3-16.8, respectively. Rubus coreanus Miquel juice had the highest total phenol content (47.3 mg gallic acid equivalent (GAE)/100 mL). Citrus sphaerocarpa juice showed higher rates of 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging (86.8%) than those of other juices. However, the oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) value (2,409.5 µM TE/mL) of Citrus sudachi Hort. ex Shirai juice was higher than those of other juices. A high correlation (R=0.7343) was observed between the pH and ORAC values for the 20 bioresources. Furthermore, a high correlation (R=0.8752) was found between the phenolic contents and DPPH radical scavenging for the 5 citrus fruits. These results suggest that the bioresources in Jeju could be used as natural antioxidants for the development of functional foods, including healthy beverages.

Background and Objectives This study was designed to examine the effects of diamide and thioredoxin TRX on vascular endothelial cells in order to clarify the mechanism by which vascular damage is mediated by oxygen free radicals. Materials and Methods The pulmonary artery endothelial cell PAEC line derived from bovine serum was cultured for 8 hours in media supplemented with various concentrations of diamide and TRX. The XTT assay, MTS assay, SRB assay, LDH activity and lipid peroxidation tests were perfomed. Results In XTT and MTS assays, diamide significantly decreased the cell viability of cultured PAEC in a dose-and time-dependent manner. Diamide showed a decrease in the amount of total protein, although it showed an increase of lipid peroxidation and LDH activity in cultured PAEC. In regards to the protective effect of TRX on diamide-induced cytotoxicity, this showed an increase of total protein, however it showed a decrease of lipid peroxidation and LDH activity. Conclusion Our results suggest that diamide has a vasculotoxic effect on cultured bovine PAEC and that TRX is very effective in the protection of diamide-induced cytotoxicity by duye to the increase of total protein and the decrease of lipid peroxidation and LDH activity in these cultures.
