This course is designed to instruct in how to layout your media for scroll preparation for SCA award. Examples will be shown and compared. In addition (separate handout), an adaptation of public domain software will be demonstrated for quick layout customization where materials are preserved at the same time.
Part 3 of 3 - The process of recreating several pages of the Pierpont-Morgan "Black Hours" manuscript, adapted as an award for a member of our medieval recreation/living history group. The original manuscript is one of only seven surviving "black hours" style of illuminated manuscripts, and the only one remaining in codex form. My recreation was done on vellum I dyed using oak gall and copperas ink I made (see Part 2 of 3) and using some pigments I created using medieval methods (see Part 1 of 3). The entire project was presented at the Society for Creative Anachronism Known World Herald and Scribe Symposium 2017.
Illumination and calligraphy with wording based on Rudolph von Ems "The Minelaid". The exemplar, The Construction of the Tower of Babel, is manuscript 33, folio 13 from the Weltchronik also known as The Chronicles of the World written earlier by Rudolph von Ems and illuminated on parchment circa 1400-1410 C.B.E.. The artist is unknown. It is held by the J Paul Getty Museum and was said to be done in Regensburg which is now in Switzerland but was part of the Hapsburg empire at the time of the creation of the exemplar. This is one of several illuminated works based on the Weltchronik.
For the Anno Societatis 50 Artisan’s Challenge I chose to prepare a later period medieval musical manuscript page (folio) with illumination and musical notation. The “scroll” was prepared in the period style using period materials, methods and tools whenever feasible. After choosing an exemplar, a digital reproduction of high quality provided by the museum (University of Montpellier, France) holding the original was examined as closely as possible using a magnifying glass and making detailed notes. While constantly consulting references listed as well as society Laurels and Grant-level award recipient, the following was taken into consideration: page layout, calligraphy hand, musical notation and layout, illuminated figures and other decoration (materials and pigments, techniques used for modeling and brushwork, the iconography (subject, composition, symbology) and style), as well as the relationship between text and images. Latin text was transcribed. I found recordings of “Deus in Aujitorium” and listening to the recordings of the exemplar motet before and during preparation of the project, as well as making the recordings available during the Artisan Challenge sessions at events, enhanced the creative process.
The collection and archiving of data from personnel dosimeters has become increasingly important in light of the lowered threshold limit values (TLV) for hydrazine (HZ), monomethylhydrazine (MMH), and unsymmetrical dimethylhydrazine (UDMH). The American Conference of Government Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) lowered the TLV from 100 parts per billion (ppb) to 10 ppb and has caused increased concern over long term exposures of personnel to trace levels of these hypergols and other potentially harmful chemicals. An automated system of reading the exposure levels of personnel dosimeters and storing exposure data for subsequent evaluation has been developed. This paper describes the design and architecture of the UbER-Badge, a wireless sensor node and wearable display designed to facilitate group interaction in large meetings and acquire a wide range of data for analyzing social dynamics. The platform design and its application suite is described, data is presented that shows the social patterns developing across large events, and experience is related from deployments of this system with groups of over 100 people.
