Although the primary function of the lullaby is coded in the very word that designates it, its secondary functions are equally important – they have been shown to have an impact on child development and mental health of the performer. The act of singing a lullaby creates a specific communicative situation in which the recipient does not fully understand its lyrics. Usually, the communicative act also only involves the performer and the child and the uniquely intimate moment that emerges creates an opportunity for the expedient to express all their thoughts – even the most unpleasant ones. The psycho-hygienic function comes to the fore and provides the performer with a space for introspection. This dimension is often reflected in the texts of lullabies in negative motifs, such as death. In various allegorical forms, death is present in as many as one in five Slovak folk lullabies. In careful interpretative analysis, it is possible to detect subtle differences in the meaning of motifs that may not originally refer to death. On this basis, death motifs can be divided into primary ones, which always symbolise death (black earth, church, river, covering/throwing, ringing of the bells, calling of a close person from the other world) and secondary ones, which acquire this meaning by updating individual motifs or whole recurring stanzas in the vertical structure of the text.

Podľa nich boli popisované zákroky vykonávané u jedincov-revenantov, ktorí mohli po smrti rôznym spôsobom poškodzovať zdravie, úspešnosť v hospodárskej činnosti a ďalšie významné sféry života pozostalých. Dôvody k takýmto zákrokom mohli prameniť nielen z nedostatkov, ku ktorým došlo pri pohrebných obradoch, ale aj nesplnením záväzkov zomrelých či neobvyklým spôsobom úmrtia.

Methodius and Their Reflection in the Landscape of Slovakia. The formation of the Cyrillo-Methodian tradition in our history has an impact on the cultural landscape. The aim of the paper is a spatial identification of the cult of Sts. Cyril and Methodius as well as the study of its impact on the landscape of Slovakia. The first step is to identify tangible and intangible features, or, more precisely, cultural landscape elements. In Slovakia, we register in connection with Sts. Cyril and Methodius more than 120 sacral objects (churches, chapels, exterior sculptures). These, together with profane objects (schools, medical facilities) and intangible elements (e.g. street names, squares, organized events), are involved in the transformation of cultural, or, more precisely, religious landscape. The largest number of sacral objects arose after 1989, in the process of modern sacralisation of the landscape, which is typical of countries with renewed religious freedom.

Poetess Mila Haugová has been known to Slovak audience for more than three decades. Her literary activity began in line with the Slovak symbolism. In the nineties of the 20th century the poetry of Haugová's poems changed. This process began after a short break, when Mila Haugová was engaged in translation activities, mainly from the contemporary Austrian literature. In our text, we have attempted to show, that this change occurred under the influence of the philosophy of language, which Haugová took from the Austrian author Ingeborg Bachmann as well as from the philosophy of poststructuralism. In the first part of the article we explain the concept of Bachmann's language critique, which was elaborated under the influence of the Austrian philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein, especially his work Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus (1921). The second part of our article focuses on the influence of psychoanalysis and poststructuralism on Mila Haugová's poetry. Through the language, the Slovak poetess creates a new, own world of poetry. Crossing the borders of the language also represents crossing the borders of the being. This process is closely linked to the identity of the poet, whose existence acquires through writing a new, higher quality.

The activity of both saints, Constantine-Cyril and Gregory of Nazianzus, is characterized by several similarities (love for education, inclination towards spiritual life, longing for solitude) that may have been influenced by Constantine’s selection of Gregory as a special patron. The study is based on the hypothesis that not only Gregory’s panegyrics and his autobiographical poem De vita sua but also a wider spectrum of Nazianzen’s poetic works influenced Constantine. It shows some selected Gregory’s verses reflected in the life and works of St. Constantine.

This paper deals with the depiction of Jewish themes in Slovak literature from the end of the 18th century until 1939-the beginning of World War II, which fundamentally changed the view on Jewry. It points on the prevailing stereotypes about Jews in Slovak literature from this period, mainly the stereotype of Jew-trader and wandering Jew-Ahasver, which reflected the attitude of Slovaks towards Jews and which led to the formation of ideas of anti-Semitism in Slovak society.

The scattered settlement landscape is a specific type of cultural landscape with a relatively low degree of transformation of the original natural landscape. Herein, we present reflections on the concept of cultural landscape in general and the specifics of a scattered settlement cultural landscape. Further, we use the example of the natural background and the cultural and political context of the Hrušov village to analyse the development of a cultural landscape with a large system of scattered settlements. Unlike most other scattered settlements inhabited by immigrants, the Hrušov scattered settlement was colonised by original local people. Analysis at this locality shows that they occur more frequently on less dissected plains despite their greater distance from the centre. The morphology of the terrain also determines the shape and character of the road network in these settlements, and their presence for long distances along roads influences the number and character of morpholog...

The article provides an insight into the linguist Y. Dzendzelivsky´s personality through his correspondence in 1973-2002. The author sets aside four thematic units intertwined with the correspondence of the researcher: old linguistic reminiscence, interuniversity and inter-institutional cooperation, international Slavic language projects and publishing activities of Slavonic centres, interpersonal relations and family life. Gender a výzkum / Gender and Research
This paper deals with the current social context in which the gender-balanced functions of the Slovak language are being created. The rules that exist for creating and using gender-based Slovak are at odds with contemporary society. This paper examines the mechanism of language changes including gender-balanced language and makes observations about how they are perceived within the communication community in particular. Language is approached as a construct that is a reflection of society and social processes, while at the same time language influences some of these processes in return. Language changes occur more slowly than social ones, or rather, these changes do not respond operatively to changes within society. An exception to this is the enrichment of vocabulary, but conceptual changes progress much more slowly. The fact that language is used to strengthen certain images of the world also plays a role in the process. Language ideology provides this process with new impulses.
