Through food choices, divisions and the mingling of groups, ethnicities and religions have found material expression; social gaps have been evidenced; the intimacy of the home dinner table has been created; and the sharing of extraordinary events has taken place, both in times of peace and war. The links between food and the social life of places have produced cultural values that are now recognized as part of the historical heritage of cities and territories, like an essential component of collective memories and narratives, as the foundation of urban, regional and national identities. Since ancient times and right up to the contemporary age, processes related to the production, preparation, trade, distribution and consumption of food have been the focus of policies implemented by city and state authorities, points of comparison and contention between social classes and interest groups, in a constant dialectic between producers and consumers, between rules and practices, between regulation and free enterprise. The architecture of the spaces allocated to these functions, the settings and representations of banquets and ceremonies, and changes of customs and fashions enact the multiple ties between food and urban life, offering insights to enhance the specific role it plays in the history of cities and territories. In the year of the Expo 2015 in Milan, the AISU Conference, organized by the Department of Historical, Geographical and Antiquity Sciences of the University of Padua, is promoting a broad interdisciplinary exchange between scholars on various topics relating to the history of the city, from which the urban structure emerges, yet again, as protagonist in all its multifaceted complexity. con l'Associazione no-profit IDRA -propone, analizza e interpreta linee di ricerca e strategie d'intervento per la governance ambientale e lo sviluppo sostenibile con un approccio multi-scalare e multidisciplinare. Le attività di ricerca che il CURSA conduce sui sistemi socio-ecologici rispondono alla natura sistemica del suo oggetto, variando dall'analisi, alla valutazione, al supporto al decisore pubblico, alla comunicazione scientifica. CURSA (pas) SAGGI riassume nel titolo la proposta di un approccio eterodosso, problematico e complesso alla ricerca sulle relazioni che legano ambiente e attività umane. Questa collana intende rappresentare un luogo di sperimentazione e scambio attraverso cui favorire la condivisione della conoscenza e la divulgazione dell'esperienza di analisi e di ricerca che il CURSA conduce. La collana ospita una produzione di saggi e studi in progress, che compongono la cosiddetta "letteratura grigia", che il CURSA sceglie di rendere visibile e fruibile. CURSA (pas) SAGGI contiene, infatti, scritti compiuti, documenti operativi, temi di frontiera, come appunti e suggestioni, che i ricercatori e i collaboratori del CURSA scelgono di pubblicare per proporre uno spaccato sullo stato della ricerca e un confronto sui suoi possibili futuri percorsi di indagine. Tutti i lavori pubblicati sono sottoposti a revisione con garanzia di terzietà (peer-review), secondo i criteri identificanti il carattere scientifico delle pubblicazioni definiti dal Ministero dell'Istruzione, dell'alla docenza porta avanti, come coordinatore, numerosi progetti di ricerca nazionali e internazionali sui temi dell'ambiente, dell'agricoltura e del paesaggio.

CLAY AND KAOLIN IN THE PROTOHISTORY AND IN THE HISTORY OF THE ISLAND OF ISCHIA (Italy) After having discovered the first remains of ancient furnaces under the church of Santa Restituta, in Lacco Ameno, in 1968 the parish priest Pietro Monti wrote: "It is clear that the Pitecusans got rich not for the non-existent gold mines mentioned by Strabone, but due to the presence of clay deposits suitable for the ceramic industry ". Thus took shape what had previously been a remote hypothesis, and attempts were made to distinguish imported ceramic products, especially from Greece, from possible imitations, in Ischia, with local clay. To date, however, the attempts by archaeologists to recognize the origin based on the raw material used have not given certain results, and the distinction continues to be based, subjectively, on typological and decorative characteristics. On the other hand, on the island there are different types of clay, not all suitable for ceramic manufactures, which have been confused each other for a long time and which continue to be confused by experienced archaeologists. The distinction between the different products can be deduced from a careful analysis of the sources, that too often are reported “through others”, without checking them and copying any errors, when not distorting them voluntarily to support preconceived theses. It was now materially possible thanks to recent geology and ores prospectings, neglected in the recent past, while specific chemical and mineralogical analyses carried out in very recent times already allow a sufficient characterization of the specific product that would have been used in ancient times.

Grazie a numerosi studi, negli ultimi anni il problema della definizione, interpretazione e valutazione della storia economica dell'Egitto ellenistico e romano ha goduto di un'attenzione intensa, tanto da prospettare ormai un disegno e una forma nuova rispetto al quadro conosciuto e reso familiare dai fondamentali lavori di C. Préaux e M. Rostovtzeff, riconosciuti rappresentanti della teoria modernista, nonché dalla serie di 'reazioni', di matrice neo-primitivista, suscitate dall'opera di M. Finley, a sua volta oggetto poi di parecchie discussioni critiche 1 .

La storia di Novaglia, soprattutto quella dell’antichità e del primo medioevo, sicuramente pone certe domande alle quali non è facile dare le risposte che convincono. Mettiamo subito in evidenza qualcuno di questi misteri: il primo è un insolito santuario paleoslavo sulla vetta più alta dell’isola. Il secondo è l’acquedotto romano sotterraneo scavato nella roccia viva. Il terzo sono le maestose basiliche paleocristiane. Il quarto è la città antica sprofondata nel mare. Tanto per darvi idea di quanto la nostra conoscenza dei fatti del passato, anche quelli di una certa importanza, sia spesso molto scarsa ed arbitraria.
