Workflow net, based on Petri nets' characteristics, is powerful and used widely. However, the workflow net itself cannot guarantee the soundness for its defined models; and what is more, the coming analysis on the workflow net models are difficult. In this paper, based on the structure of the classical workflow net, it introduces a new kind of net for modeling business processes, named normalized workflow net (NWF-net). NWF-net, which can be represented by a context-free language, can effectively avoid those structure problems occurred in the classical workflow net by removing some possible unnatural patterns. NWF-net satisfies all the required properties needed for workflow process modeling while keeping a strongly modeling capability, and the computational performance analysis, such as the expected completion time, becomes simple.

Abstract High-level Petri nets have been used to model systems in a variety of application domains, ranging from protocols to logistics. This paper addresses an application domain which is receiving more and more attention: workflows in offices and their management. High-level Petri nets are used to model (1) the workflow in an office environment and (2) the workflow management system to support the control of office work. In this way we will be able to formalize the main concepts.

Several years of research are establishing Petri Nets as a modeling formalism for scientific workflows; their formal semantics and the existence of several analysis tools, among others, make them suitable for complex concurrent processes' description. However, the non-determinism of the Petri Net model clashes with the imperative Turingbased environment provided by mainstream programming languages such as C/C++, Java and C#. Therefore several design decisions must be taken in order to provide a concrete implementation of a Petri Net-based engine.

Over the last decade there has been a shift from "data-aware" information systems to "process-aware" information systems. To support business processes an enterprise information system needs to be aware of these processes and their organizational context. Business Process Management (BPM) includes methods, techniques, and tools to support the design, enactment, management, and analysis of such operational business processes. BPM can be considered as an extension of classical Workflow Management (WFM) systems and approaches. This tutorial introduces models, systems, and standards for the design, analysis, and enactment of workflow processes. Petri nets are used for the modeling and analysis of workflows. Using Petri nets as a formal basis, contemporary systems, languages, and standards for BPM and WFM are discussed. Although it is clear that Petri nets can serve as a solid foundation for BPM/WFM technology, in reality systems, languages, and standards are developed in an ad-hoc fashion. To illustrate this XPDL, the "Lingua Franca" proposed by the Workflow Management Coalition (WfMC), is analyzed using a set of 20 basic workflow patterns. This analysis exposes some of the typical semantic problems restricting the application of BPM/WFM technology.

In world of industry, the deployment and execution of business processes can be a very costly investment. The problem is in extreme situations; companies need additional resources to ensure the smooth running of business process. Moreover, they need to know exactly when a business process needs more resources, to be able to use cloud resources. In this work, we have defined a formal model that supports the specification and analysis of company requirements in resources and allows simulating many parallel executions of business process. To detect situations that can be caused by the lack of resources in business process execution.

Control-flow and data-flow modeling and verification are two important challenges for traditional workflow management. To formulate the data-flow modeling and verification, a Petri Net based approach is proposed in this paper. More specifically, the WFIO-net, which is a kind of WF-net by extending each activity with its read and write data sets, is first presented to model both the control-flow and data-flow information in a workflow process. Moreover, the firing rule of WFIO-net which is different from traditional Petri net is discussed in detail. Then the formal definitions of three basic types of data-flow errors, including missing data, redundant data and conflicting data are formulated using WFIO-net. Next, a polynomial complexity algorithm which is capable of detecting the above-mentioned three kinds of basic data-flow anomalies is proposed based on the activity-data incidence matrix of the WFIO-net. A running case of a property loan approval business process is given to validate the proposed method.
