At a time when many of us find ourselves working from home in social isolation, NAADSN has invited various Canadian academic subject matter experts to suggest core readings on topics related to North American and Arctic Defence and Security. The internet is filled with perspectives and opinions. These lists are intended to help direct policy shapers, practitioners, and academics to credible open access sources, available online free of charge, that reflect leading-edge research and thinking. The compilers of each list have been asked to select readings that are accessibly written (ie. they are not filled with excessive jargon), offer a diversity of viewpoints, and encourage critical thinking and debate.
The authors analyze the Arctic strategies of the United States, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO ), the European Union (EU), and Russia. They also discuss Russian–Norwegian relations and the militarization of the Arctic.

After the demise of the Cold War the Arctic has been emerging as a scene for increasing scientific, environmental and economic cooperation between governments. In the military sphere though, the Arctic remains in the shadow of the military confrontation and competition of the Cold War. Russia maintains massive nuclear and conventional forces in the region, and the United States and United Kingdom continue to operate their attack submarines beneath the Arctic ice. This study is aimed at describing these strategic interests in the High North, focusing on their implications for the states which are located in the High North. It also tries to identify those Arms Control of Confidence Building Measures which might bed beneficial to enhance stability in the area.

This book showcases selected articles on Arctic security published in the Journal of Military and Strategic Studies (JMSS) over the last decade. By situating Canadian discussions in broader circumpolar and global contexts, the chapters in this volume provide insights into how climate change, changes in governance systems, increased shipping (and the prospect of much more), energy and mineral development, Arctic states’ expanding military presence, and growing non-Arctic state interests are interacting to create a complex, evolving Arctic security environment. Introductions to each section contextualize ongoing academic and policy debates about defence, security, and state sovereignty in the Arctic, as well as offering suggestions for further reading.

And yet, in the past two decades, conceptions about Arctic security have shifted. What attracts many of us in the Thematic Network to the study of the Arctic region is its unique model of defining and seeking security. Famously, while traditional security issues are alive and well, the region has uniquely accepted and embraced discourses on environmental and human security issues including environmental protection, Indigenous self-determination, safety, interregional cooperation, development, and the rule of law.
In this timely new book, international scholars and military professionals come together to explore the strategic consequences of the thawing of the Arctic. Their analyses of efforts by governments and defense, security, and coast guard organizations to address these challenges make timely and urgent reading. Rather than a single national perspective, The Fast-Changing Arctic brings together circumpolar viewpoints from North America, Europe and Asia for an integrated discussion of strategic military, diplomatic, and security challenges in the high North. Thoughtful analyses are included of different regions, climate issues, institutions, and foreign and security policies. This is an important book for students of international studies, political science, and northern studies.
