ETYMOLOGICA MACEDONICA is a publication of the Institute of Macedonian Language "Krste Misirkov". The first issue contains the headings: Occasions, Returns and New Works, and for the following issues, apart from these, the headings: Reports and Chronicles are also provided.
The presented papers explore the valuable lexical fund of the Macedonian medieval texts, referring to different areas of the material and non-material culture, in order to upgrade the knowledge for the history of the Macedonian language and culture, for the historical continuity of the national cultural history over the centuries, and in context of a broader slavistic research.

This paper presents a systematic overview of what the Concise etymological dictionary of the Serbian language (CEDSL) owes to the magnificent opus of Vuk Karadžić (Vuk). This contribution is directly or indirectly reflected in all three segments of this dictionary’s lemma. What this looks like is illustrated by examples of particular lemmata. The first part of the CEDSL lemma typically refers to Vuk’s Srpski rječnik (The Serbian dictionary, in some of its editions) as a source of the first fixation of words hitherto unattested (s.vv. нокшир, швалер). The first edition of that dictionary is also the single source of obscene lexicon, which is also treated in CEDSL. In the first, but also in the third part of the lemma, excerpts from folklore (lines of epic poems, proverbs, etc.) collected by Vuk are used as illustrations of the use of the words analysed (e.g. бисер, бора, брада; алат). The third part of the lemma, reserved for various comments and discussion, abounds with data from Vuk’s Rječnik and from his wider corpus. Various formal aspects (phonetic, morphological and word-formation ones) are quoted and interpreted or else those related to semantics (original meaning, obsolete and regional meanings, semantic developements) of the words analyzed (e.g. макнути, опна; ваљати; камен; брдо; ганути, ној; поклон; кашика, новац). This part of the lemma can include facts related to the cultural history of words (e.g. задужбина). Etymological judgement is provided in the second part of the CEDSL lemma. It happens frequently that exactly Vuk’s data contribute to establishing the ultimate etymology, or at the very least point the pursuit of the final etymon in a certain direction. At times the very fact of presence or absence of a word in the Rječnik is indicative of its chronology and/or its status within the Serbian language (e.g. завет; одличан), and occasionally the origin of a word is implicated by Vuk’s information about its geographic distribution (e.g. кафа, но). But of the greatest consequence are instances when Vuk’s examples, by the way of their form or meaning, most directly influence the formulation of etymological judgement (e.g. кликнути, орити се). Vuk’s entire corpus, and especially his Srpski rječnik, enters into a specific symbiosis with CEDSL: to a large extent, and in many aspects, Vuk’s material enriches CEDSL which, in its turn, sheds new light onto deeper layers of lexical and cultural riches hidden in Vuk’s Srpski rječnik. Keywords: Serbian language, etymology, lexicography, Srpski rječnik, Vuk Karadžić.

Two etymological dictionaries of the Serbian language are currently being compiled – Etimološki rečnik srpskog jezika (ERSJ), an exhaustive, thesaurus-type, long-term project, and Priručni etimološki rečnik srpskog jezika (PERSJ),a concise manual. These dictionaries differ conceptually in two major aspects: a) the lexical material they are based on – exhaustive literary and dialectal material for ERSJ on the one hand, and standard Serbian for PERSJ on the other; b) the audiences they address – experts in etymology and linguists in general for ERSJ on the one hand, and both linguistic experts and the broader audience for PERSJ on the other. The aim of this paper was to investigate whether the conceptual differences between the two dictionaries have resulted in differences in methodological treatment. The analysis of the respective material (covering letters a- and b-) has exposed the following differences: a smaller number of lemmas in PERSJ than in ERSJ (§ 3.1); a more nest-oriented approach in the organization of lemmas in PERSJ than in ERSJ (§ 3.2); more recent borrowings in PERSJ than in ERSJ (§ 3.3); the headword in PERSJ is a form from standard Serbian, accented and grammatically determined (§ 5.1.2), while in ERSJ the headword is a kind of ’hyperlemma’, an initial derivation form without accent (§ 5.1.1); the first part of the lemma in PERSJ is significantly shorter than in ERSJ, due to a more restrictive selection of derivatives and to the absence of dialectal material, semantic definitions, references and place names (§ 5.2.2); a more precise identification of the etymon in the case of inter-Slavic borrowings in PERSJ, especially in the case of loanwords from (Old) Church Slavonic (§ 6.3); the explanation of 258 Снежана М. Петровић, Марија Д. Вучковић synonyms and functional or regional variants, often given in the third part of the lemma in PERSJ, are absent from ERSJ (§ 7.6); in the case of loanwords, parallels from other languages placed in the second part of the lemma in ERSJ, are transferred to the third part in PERSJ (§ 6.2); information on word history and cultural history in a broader sense appears more frequently, and is more detailed in PERSJ than in ERSJ (§ 7.7); references in PERSJ are clustered at the end of the lemma, whilst in ERSJ each piece of data cited has its own reference (§ 8). 0. COLLECTIVE MONOGRAPH of the MACEDONIAN LANGUAGE – CONTINUITY IN SPACE AND TIME
The paper deals with the methodology of compiling а new, single-volume Etymological dictionary of the Serbian language, which encompasses the basic lexical fund (ca. 7,500 lemmata). It is meant for professional use and aimed to be a means for expediting the work on the already commenced multivolume dictionary, as well as the basis for future popular editions. After explaining different criteria for various choices made by the authors and describing the four-segmented structure and content of lemmata, it is concluded that this dictionary is a specific compromise between the popular and professional. It is popular in form: limited word list, absence of definitions and complete lists of derivatives, heightened stress on facts of historic and cultural interests. It is professional in essence: it provides detailed etymological discussion based on most up-to-date references, first attestations, parallels from both close and distant languages (Slavic, Balkan and Indo-European, Turcic respectively), etc. The method described is illustrated by lemmata gvožđe, dopasti (se), izlet, jalov, kanal, lučiti, mirisati, sablja.
Спектар / Спектар, No. 77, 2021
The issue of the use of pseudonyms, anonymous, initials and abbreviations in the 19th century is one of the most difficult, but also the most important for understanding the quantity and quality of Macedonian literature of this period. Finding and establishing the true identity of the authors whose pseudonyms are scattered on the pages of periodicals and book covers is a challenge, but also a necessity in order to enrich Macedonian literature with new names and works. Creators use pseudonyms for a variety of reasons (political persecution, fashion, symbolism). In addition to the pseudonyms that are quite present in our literature from the 19th century, a large part belongs to the anonymous, initials and abbreviations. On a much smaller scale we encounter a different way of hiding our identity, the graphonym. With this type of pseudonym, the author’s own name is replaced by signs, numbers, various numeral or other designations. Many Macedonian writers signed their works as anonymous, as well as under pseudonyms, starting from Konstantin Miladinov, Andreja Petkovic and Kuzman Shapkarev, through Natanail Kuchevski, Rajko Zhinzifov, Evtim Sprostranov, Josif Kovachev, Dimitar Makedonski, to Kosta Shahov, Georgi Kapchev, Petar Pop Arsov, Evtimica Jancheva, Krste Misirkov, Dimitar Molerov and others. In doing so, we found that the choice of the pseudonym is not random, but a product of the author’s psychology. Thus, for example, Krste Misirkov signed with K. Pelski, which actually designates his birthplace Postol or the old Macedonian capital Pella. So, in specifying the true identity through the process of deciphering the abbreviations and pseudonyms of the authors, we were faced with the use of abbreviations (K., N. P. F., E-Sv); signs and symbols (*,?); pseudonyms (Green Pine, K. Suhodolski, Pradoljubov); changing the surname by adding the noun Makedonski (Dimitar V. Makedonski, Gjorgji Makedonski); new surname and / or name (Kalistrat Zografski); by adding the term one (“One Macedonian”, “One patriarchal “), naming signaling local affiliation (Vojdan Chernodrinski, Veleshanin, Ezerski, Vardar,” Someone from the Ohrid Diocese “); obtaining church names (Nathanael Kuchevishki / Zografski / Ohridski, Parthenij Zografode) ), etc. In the paper we also dwell on certain mystifications: Veda Slovena (work of Jovan Gologanov, published by Stefan Verkovic), “King Marko loses his strength” (by Trajko Kitanchev), “Mara voperkata”(with the variant “Mourning of Mara”) (by Evtim Sprostranov), “Siljan the Stork” (by Marko Cepenkov). /
