Abstract

Abstract: Archdiocese of Ohrid of Justiniana Prima and of all Bulgaria, abbreviated as Ohrid Archdiocese, is the name of the Bulgarian Autocephalous Orthodox Church subordinate to the Patriarchate of Constantinople within the borders of the Bulgarian lands conquered by Byzantium in 1018. It is the receiver of the Bulgarian (Preslav) Patriarchate, which has been demoted to the rank of Archdiocese of Bulgaria. The diocese, the Bulgarian nationality of its superior and its rights are defined by two Charters of Emperor Basil II for the rights of the Ohrid archdiocese. In sources from the 11th-12th century, it is mentioned as a Bulgarian archdiocese (Αρχιεπίσκοπος της πάσης Βουλγαριας), which later became a multinational status. It was non-canonically closed with a Sultan's firman in 1767 at the insistence of the Constantinople Greek Patriarch Samuil I (Chatzeres), and its diocese was joined to that of the Constantinople Patriarchate.
