Oxford Handbook of World Philosophy, 2011
This book provides a set of introductions to each of the world's major non-European philosophical traditions. It offers the non-specialist a way into unfamiliar philosophical texts and methods and the opportunity to explore non-European philosophical terrain and to connect their work in one tradition to philosophical ideas or texts from another. Sections on Chinese philosophy, Indian philosophy, Buddhist philosophy, East Asian philosophy, African philosophy, and recent trends in global philosophy are each edited by an expert in the field. Each section includes a general introduction and a set of articles written by scholars, designed to provide a broad overview of a major topic or figure.

There are many “introductions” to philosophy. Some of these are very good. Many more are not. The goal of this book is not to replace either the good or the bad, but only to provide another entryway into the philosophical way of life. It is intended for serious, dedicated persons who wish to challenge themselves and improve their ability to think; not for armchair “intellectuals” nor for those faint of heart; not for sophists nor pretenders nor anyone who would mistake eloquence for wisdom. Despite being an “introduction”, this is not an easy book. Philosophy made easy, or simple, or for dummies, hardly deserves to claim the name. But there is reward in the struggle. Indeed, is there any reward without? **Preview of forthcoming book** -- Full text now available: https://www.academia.edu/38727510/Introduction_to_Philosophical_Principles_-_Full_Text

REVIEWS 445 dents, but not for lack of helpful examples or carefully articulated positions. The structure of the book is well-suited to the classroom, particularly the technique of pairing contrasting articles. The collection does lean heavily on the problem of consciousness, and may be best suited to instructors with a strength or interest in the area.
