In the last thirty years, thanks to a joint effort by theorists, researchers and translators, Translation Studies has become a significant new field of knowledge, capable of developing its own theories, methodologies and research tools. At the same time, translation activity has also boomed, not only in quantitative terms since globalization policies have boosted the exchange of information between cultures as well as the production of texts in several languages but also as to the diversification of translation tasks, with the emergence of new forms of translation, most of them stemming from technological developments, such as software localization and subtitling. These developments pose a new challenge to translator training. How can learners be trained to successfully meet the growing and increasingly diverse demands of the translation market? This article will tackle some aspects of this challenge, with special focus on the revised notion of translation competence and the impact ...

This article discusses the presuppositions for the upbringing and performance of the German-Portuguese translator in Brazil. The considerations point out some divergences in the translator’s upbringing, and discussing them. The main issue of this article is considering what extent translator’s upbringing should coincide or not with that one from foreign languages’ students.

Este artigo objetiva analisar os desafios encontrados na aplicação prática das diretrizes de audiodescrição brasileira (Minc, 2010) e norte-americanas (2007/2008) no contexto de formação de tradutores. A partir de um estudo de caso, refletimos acerca do processo didático de audiodescrição do curta-metragem “Mariza”. A partir do relato dos aprendizes, observamos como desafios centrais a seleção de informação prioritária, a impossibilidade de neutralidade nas escolhas e a subjetividade de algumas diretrizes.

This paper addresses the issue of how to use translation as a method to understand archives. To this end, this paper proposes an intersection between Vilém Flusser’s reflection about his own writing method and the artistic experience of Mabe Bethônico as translator of the archives of the geologist and geographer Edgar Aubert de la Rüe.

As the title suggests, this book brings together reflections on translation and its practice from the viewpoints of a variety of Brazilian translators. These are non-systematized reflections which were produced in different historical contexts spanning over two hundred years, from the end of the 18th century until the present day. They come from paratexts and metatexts written by translators, men and women, which offer approaches to diverse textual genres: from technical/ scientific writings to fiction, as well as children's literature, epic and lyrical poetry, and drama. The book, in bilingual format, is aimed at the Brazilian and international academic communities. It was conceived with the purpose of widening the reach of a body of texts that were originally found in books where their significance is sometimes not apparent. Following a diachronic structure, the opening text, the 1798 "Discurso do traductor" ("Discourse of the Translator"), was written by Manuel Jacinto Nogueira da Gama, and accompanies his translation of Lazare Carnot's Réflexions sur la métaphysique du calcul infinitésimal (Reflections on the Metaphysical Principles of the Infinitesimal Analysis). Next, there is Odorico Mendes' prologue to his translation of Homer's Iliad [1863?]. On to the 20th century, we present passages about translation from Monteiro Lobato's letters, published in 1944; a text by Clarice Lispector, "Traduzir procurando não trair" ("Translating Seeking not to Betray"), originally published in issue 177 of Joia magazine, in Rio de Janeiro, in May 1968; an excerpt from "Transluciferação mefistofáustica" ("Mephistofaustian Transluciferation") by Haroldo de
