Collective memory is a representation of the past that is shared by members of a group such as a ... more Collective memory is a representation of the past that is shared by members of a group such as a generation or nation-state. Because the study of collective memory has occurred in several disciplines in the humanities and social sciences it is not a single, coherent topic. Instead, it is best approached in terms of a few traditions of inquiry that exist largely because of disciplinary isolation rather than conceptual contradiction. Each tradition has a different way of answering the question: What makes collective memory collective? Three particular traditions in the study of collective memory are outlined: collective memory as social framing, collective memory in the social construction of groups, and collective memory as semiotic distribution. Collective memory as social framing has been studied mostly in psychology, whereas the study of collective memory in the social construction of groups has been examined largely in sociology and political science. The study of collective memory as semiotic distribution has occurred in disciplines such as history, semiotics, and anthropology and focuses on the role of narratives as shared cultural tools.

Contemporary writings on Vygotsky have not given adequate attention to his particular recognition... more Contemporary writings on Vygotsky have not given adequate attention to his particular recognition of natural constraints in cognitive development. This article examines his notion of two main lines of psychological development – the natural and the cultural – in the light of contemporary Marxist debates concerning the relation between the ‘material’ and the ‘social’. It argues that an adequate account of Vygotsky’s theory must ground the social construction of cognition in a fundamental recognition of natural and biological possibility. The thesis is justified by analyzing Vygotsky’s concepts of internalization, mediation, and the zone of proximal development.

While an impressive body of findings clearly supports the existence of some universals, the concern with universals has come to dominate scientific discourse, at least in psychology, to such a degree that we have paid all too little attention to ways in which human functioning is tied to particular cultural, historical, and institutional settings. A sociocultural approach to mind seeks to redress this imbalance. Its fundamental principle is that all human mental functioning is inherently situated in cultural, historical, and institutional settings. It seeks to ground an explication of such functioning in terms of these settings. Such an approach contrasts with views which seek to explicate human action in terms of some underlying universals and then try to&dquo;add on&dquo; factors or variables having to do with culture, class, history, and so forth. A sociocultural approach requires a fundamental reworking of the categories we invoke for theoretical and empirical research because it insists that sociocultural situatedness be part of the theoretical and empirical research agenda from the ground up. In the past, studies that would have qualified as sociocultural approaches to mind have usually been conducted by scholars from anthropology, history, comparative sociology, cross-cultural psychology, and other such disciplines. An essential claim of a sociocultural approach to mind is that one need to be a card carrying member of any of these disciplines to conduct such analyses. Anyone interested in psychological processes, with the possible exception of neurological functioning (but see Luria, 1971; Mecacci, 1979), is inherently concerned with socioculturally situated mental processes. Publisher Summary This chapter discusses the specific issue of Vygotsky's analysis of the pro... more Publisher Summary This chapter discusses the specific issue of Vygotsky's analysis of the properties of semiotic mechanisms that influence the nature of higher mental processes. Vygotsky began with the assumption that the mastery of language and other cultural sign systems is not the sole factor that accounts for the emergence of higher mental processes such as thinking, logical memory, and voluntary attention. Because he employed a genetic or developmental method, Vygotsky assumed that the only way to unravel the nature of such functioning in the individual is to trace it back to its origins. Vygotsky's account of semiotic mediation is based on two opposing tendencies he recognized in the organization and use of human language. The existence of generalized categorization as reflected in interpsychological functioning is only the first step in Vygotsky's line of reasoning about decontextualized word meaning. Vygotsky's most specific examination of this general claim can be found in his account of inner speech, which he viewed as a dynamic flow or stream of mental functioning.
