Martin Mulder is Emeritus Professor of Education at Wageningen University and was Head of the chair group of Education and Competence Studies. He specialized in competence theory and research. He did research in the field of human resource development, vocational and professional education and higher education. He has been leading a research and education program with around 40 coworkers and 30 PhD students. Currently he is Chair of the Academic Board of Salta Group Higher Education.

Nowadays, many organizations employ parts of their workforce via employment agencies and, as such... more Nowadays, many organizations employ parts of their workforce via employment agencies and, as such, temporary agency workers (TAWs) are important for our economies. Increasingly, research is conducted to explore the relationships among the three parties involvedthe TAW, the client organization and employment agency and how this relationship can be strengthened by HR instruments. This study adds to this stream of literature by studying to what extent TAWs' affective commitment (AC) towards the client organization and employment agency relates to their expectations and their fulfilled expectations regarding offered opportunities for competence development (OfCD) by both organizations, and by exploring to what extent TAWs regard both employment organizations responsible for offering them OfCD. A cross-sectional survey study was conducted among TAWs in the Netherlands (n = 449), including quantitative and qualitative analyses. All results of this study together revealed that TAWs tend to be focused on the client organization with regard to OfCD. This is the organization to which they feel most affectively committed, that they regard responsible for organizing their OfCD, and where they ask for OfCD. This study indicated that TAWs do not yet profit maximally from the triangular employment relationship, and have a rather traditional view on TAW constructions.

An assessment innovation as flywheel for changing teaching and learning

This contribution shows an example of how an assessment innovation can serve as a flywheel for ch... more This contribution shows an example of how an assessment innovation can serve as a flywheel for changing teaching and learning. This article first explains the development of an authentic, competence-based performance assessment in pre-vocational secondary education (pre-VET). Using these assessments in pre-VET, that is preparatory to VET, is important for motivating students for a future in VET. Second, in an action research 34 teacher teams of 11 pre-VET institutions implement the new assessment, supported by researchers and teacher coaches, to illuminate how it motivates students, prepares them for VET, and influences teaching and learning. Data from 76 teachers, 68 students, 24 teacher coaches and 3 researchers showed how implementing these assessments raised questions about changing educational content and pedagogy to fit a competence-based approach. Increasing teachers' expectations of students, changing studentteacher interaction patterns, and developing teachers' practical understanding of competencies and how they can be observed and discussed in assessments are some of the intriguing challenges that require further support for proper implementation of competence-based assessments and developing an aligned competence-based teaching and learning process.

Transformational leadership also was positively associated with participative decision making. Participative decision making was positively associated with team commitment and task interdependence. Team commitment and task interdependence were positively associated with team member proactivity. Team member proactivity was positively associated with all team learning activities.

This book provides a rich collection of research and practice perspectives around central topics ... more This book provides a rich collection of research and practice perspectives around central topics in the field of work-based learning (WBL). Based on an extensive prior literature review of the current state of research on WBL in TVET contexts on a global scale, key themes of interest for a competence-based perspective were chosen to call for contributions from researchers and experts in VET from all around the world. Inspired by research evidence from a diversity of recent national projects, the book offers new insights in conducive factors for learning on the level of the individual subject and the work environment. The papers pick up regional and national challenges in supporting WBL and in developing and implementing curricula based on actual work processes. They take a closer look at the role of tutors in WBL and show new options in the transfer and recognition of knowledge, skills and competences. The research approaches presented in this book are meant to support everyone in meeting their TVET objectives, regardless of region and scale.

Because corporate social responsibility (CSR) is potentially beneficial for companies, it is impo... more Because corporate social responsibility (CSR) is potentially beneficial for companies, it is important to understand the factors that improve a company’s CSR practice. Scholars hypothesize that facilitating learning organization characteristics, which are divided in characteristics at the organizational and the operational level, may improve CSR implementation. These characteristics stimulate companies and their members to be critical, learn from the past, and embrace change, but there is limited empirical evidence of this approach. This study addresses this gap by surveying 280 CSR professionals and performing bootstrap mediation analyses to test multiple hypotheses. Learning organization characteristics at the organizational level, play a key role in supporting CSR implementation: leadership for learning, system connection, and group learning show a direct relationship with CSR implementation. It is striking that the role of the learning organization characteristics at the operational level is only indirect; the organizational characteristics mediate their relationship with CSR implementation.
