The paper discusses the most important compositional techniques used by Bartok in the creation of... more The paper discusses the most important compositional techniques used by Bartok in the creation of the third of his six String Quartets. These techniques are used extensively throughout the composition, shaping it from within, carrying therefore a more subtle meaning which must be addressed in order to understand the work. Particularly interesting is the way the composer chooses traditional approaches which take an important role in the creative process of this experimental and extremely innovative composition.
The essay addresses the complexity of Romanticism in music as a single movement: while history te... more The essay addresses the complexity of Romanticism in music as a single movement: while history tends to establish Romantic music as an artistic current with its specific features and its inner developments, the paper aims to show and explain how the aesthetical grounds of this current are diverse, at times rather opposite. The main musical/philosophical positions are treated: from Schumann to Berlioz, from Liszt to Wagner, from Debussy to Hanslick. Although the approach used is historical, particular attention is given to the aesthetical purposes of each discussed composer or philosopher.
The intention of this thesis is to analyze and discuss musical improvisation as a means of contem... more The intention of this thesis is to analyze and discuss musical improvisation as a means of contemporary artistic expression, related or unrelated to a particular style or genre of music. This subject is particularly difficult to address today if considered untied from musical genres, since improvisation is an artistic activity most likely to be found only in specific music fields. The necessity to address the importance of it (as a creative, learning and teaching opportunity) is even more important today since the lines between genres are more blurred than in the past, and the physical connection with a musical instrument tends to give way to a rational and more detached performing attitude. Several different theoretical approaches originate within the activity of improvisation and are discussed here: through an aesthetical perspective of this phenomenon each kind of improvisation might suggest and guide both the creativity of the performer and the ears of the listener. A more thorough analysis of two recordings by renowned artists will introduce the reader to the consideration of five improvisations of mine, recently recorded, which exhibit how a selected approach and technique could be used in order to shape the improvisative act into an expressive activity. The recordings are an integral part of the thesis, since only through them is it possible to comprehend the analytical perspective adopted. (to listen to the recordings don't hesitate to contact me)
